TPP TV Blackout

Barack Obama is traveling to several Asian countries this week, and high on the agenda is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a secretive corporate-friendly commercial agreement that has mobilized critics around the globe. The deal is even running into stiff resistance in Congress.

But the TPP is not, according to the big TV networks, news. As FAIR documented (Extra!, 3/14) in the year after Obama mentioned TPP in his 2013 State of the Union address, there were no stories about TPP on the three major networks.

FAIR wants you to sign a petition to ABC, CBS and NBC to encourage them to cover what is by any standard a big news story.

And we've made a short video that we think drives home the point. Take a look:

but suspiciously. The media will 'spin' this as a jobs creator, a good thing for 'merica. It Does need to be brought out of secrecy and more people to be aware of what's being formented behind closed corporate doors. There Might be some discussion.

At least Democracy Now and Bill Moyers have covered it, but the corporate bullhorn? not much chance.

4. The McLaughlin Group brought up TPP briefly during a show I saw yesterday (PBS)

Not surprisingly, they seem to think it's going to be a good thing to get into that market.

When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Meanwhile, how is the First Amendment doing?

Surveillance chilling speech, including emails and other internet, phones, US mail (maybe private carriers, too?), and mikes that pick up conversations in streets, and in homes. (One of the former SCOTUS Justices, I think Brennan, mentioned the mikes that pick up conversations from insider buildings, so that bit has gone on for many years). Mass surveillance, of course, being a double whammy (at least) 1 & 4

Feinstein and D of J trying to define "publisher" to exclude non-mainstream publishers from protections

Pro establishment mass media that will spin and voluntary refrain from covering leftist things. The time it took for Occupy Wall St. to make media noise compared with the tiny two hour Tea Party parades is but one example. And, then, there was the significant media role in the run up to invading Iraq. Indeed, the media role was a great deal of that run up.

TV blackouts, too?
