The "tragic boating accident" meme addresses that particular possibility.

"Mr. Morgendorffer, the records from Holness Guns & Ammo indicate that you own a Glock 19 and a Remington 700. These must be turned in."

"Well, you see, what happened was that I brought them on a fishing trip out on the Bay, and we wound up getting capsized. They're probably rusted through at the bottom by now."

as I don't hunt and it really hasn't been necessary except maybe as a visual deterrent or fun to target with. Would want to keep my handguns though.

Here's the question I have for people who would seriously consider such a ban:

How are you going to get the criminals to turn theirs in?

No such law is going to change either human nature or the laws of physics. I will remain a small female, vulnerable to physical assault by a larger, stronger young male (the statistically-likely perpetrator of such an assault) without some mechanical means of force equalization. A handgun is, by a considerable margin, the most effective such tool currently available. Not panacea or magic wand to wave against all harm...but the best available. I would by no means like disobeying the law (something I very seldom do) or having to be so covert about what I am doing, but I consider the alternatives to be unacceptable.

.... along with most of my local police department. (I hear some of them are already planning on how to attack the rear of BATF SWAT teams.) I shoot with a lot of the LEOs in our local PD. The feds would have to fight their way through our own SWAT team first. And I imagine my small little Texas town isn't the only one.

It would be pretty ugly.

would go along with something like that. Numerous states have it written into the state constitution that gun ownership is a right.

For that matter what makes you think police departments would enforce the law?
(My theory is that, IN GENERAL, the farther away you get from the urban areas, the less likely the police will enforce the laws, with a majority of police refusing to enforce the law coming from the rank & file patrol officers)

I'd even bring my guns to the disposal facility riding my rainbow shitting unicorn.

I seem to be in a sarcastic mood.

How would you pay for them? I believe that the Fifth Amendment would take effect. To collect them you would have to pay the fair market price at the time they were banned.
Got a few BILLION dollars extra?
