Your tax dollars at work.

Another ATF weapons operation comes under scrutiny

I had a friend involved with drug interdiction some years back. He was at an agency conference which started with a dinner and the recognition of accomplishments. The next day at a budget meeting he quickly hushed when he asked about the efficacy of spending $9 million to seize the $6 million in contraband that was praised the evening before.

We spend money for law enforcement. There's not usually an expectation that the Police Department (or other agency) will turn a profit.

Spending 9million and pulling in 6million sounds almost profitable. Usually we would spend 9 million or 9 thousand or 9 hundred to investigate crime, and there is no "bag of cash" at the end, just a criminal in cuffs, who we have to feed, provide with a lawyer, etc.

This idea of spending money to investigate crime does not, of course, apply to the Traffic and Parking Enforcement groups. They, of course, are expected to make a profit.

---

On the other hand, if we just legalized drugs, we could reduce the size of government, not spend the 9 mil on investigations, and the 6 million worth of contraband would become 6 thousand worth of legally imported product.

...the bulk of the seizures were pot in various forms. Probably shouldn't be illegal. Probably should be taxed at least like Pepsi or maybe more like Jack Daniels or even Marlboro. It's a waste.

Where law enforcement agencies would benefit by seizing cars, homes, and anything else that was an asset that the drug pusher used in the performance of his activities or was gotten by the profits from illegal activities.

One reason they liked going for the bigger dogs. The little guys ain't got anything worth going after.
