http://www.fresnobee.com/2012/01/07/2674287/traver-area-homeowner-shoots-intruder.htmlThe incident began shortly before 1 a.m. Friday at the home on the 4300 block of Avenue 352 when the resident -- a 36-year-old man who was at home with his 33-year-old wife and four children -- reported to the Sheriff's Department that a man was in his front yard kicking his family's dog.

Drugs make these people do strange things. And you know drugs were involved...kick the dog, try and break into the garage, break into a vehicle, then break into the house and get shot.

(15,374 posts)Isn't that the advice we get from many Anti's? "Get a dog..."?

(15,396 posts)Great great alert dogs that run from and bark at any strangers. There's now way anyone can kick those little turds. At night they're in their cage in the great room, anything goes on inside or outside and they'll let me know. On the plus side there's almost zero nuisance barking inside or outside.
Let's say they tell me when to respond to a threat.

(17,493 posts)some are not.
I had one that was overly protective. Happy was a fairly intimidating Norwegian Elkhound. He was a great alarm dog but perhaps a little too good as he would notice a stranger three houses from my home and alarm. He would have been fantastic in a rural area but was a pain in an urban environment.
He was also aggressive when people knocked on the door. I would settle him down and if they entered the home, he would simply sit and watch them. When they decided to leave he would once again become aggressive. He never bit anyone but he made a lot of people who visited very uncomfortable. I was often asked why I had named him "Happy."
The next dog that I got was a female Black Lab. She was a docile sweetheart and very intelligent but worthless as a protection dog. I often felt she was so smart that she knew that I was the person with the gun and figured that it was my job to protect her.
We now have two Boston Terriers. They are good alarm dogs but would probably jump up on a chair and lick a burglar's face before they would bite him.

(18,482 posts)She was half German Shepherd and half Rottweiler. Mostly stuck with you. Would play fetch. Noticed anyone on the porch but not across the street. If someone came in and I shook their hand and smiled, she would be happy and friendly. If you came in and moved too fast or raised your hand... well I was very glad the mailman wore gloves that day.

(7,720 posts)Norwegian Elkhound. She too was overly protective. When she, unprovoked, bit a neighbor's 2 1/2-year old boy on his forehead, that do was gone within an hour. I was quite young, but I'm sure that dog was better off at the farm where my dad found her a home. He was not home enough to become the dog's master.

(17,493 posts)I may consider getting another one if I move to such a location. Unfortunately I live in Florida and it's a little warm for such a dog here.

(950 posts)She's a good alert dog (barks at mice on the back porch) not a very good guard dog though

(17,493 posts)Once alerted I can hopefully make a better decision on what action to take than a dog.
