Second Amendment-only voters threaten hunting opportunities

When you ask sportsmen about conservation, many will tell you that it’s downright American. The Nature Conservancy commissioned a survey of 800 registered voters earlier this year and found 82 percent agreed that conservation of America’s natural resources is “patriotic.”

“We continue to see that voters overwhelmingly reject the idea that protecting land and water is at odds with a strong economy,” said Christy Plumer, director of federal land programs at The Nature Conservancy.

Yet the full force of that conservation consensus among sportsmen rarely comes together behind any single issue or election. A steadfast support of the Second Amendment right to bear arms, for example, often splits the sporting community with many choosing to cast their vote solely on the basis of which candidate they believe will best preserve or advance gun rights.

But the pro-gun candidate isn’t always the best on preserving wildlife, public lands access and other conservation matters important to the outdoor recreation community.

3. 2nd-A voters often aren't hunters at all.

They're gun nuts. My Favorite Wingnut is a classic example. He's always buying new $1000-range tactical short-bbl auto shotguns (I think his latest SG holds 12 rounds), assault rifles, pistols, etc. to repel raging mobs of home invaders he envisions after Obama collapses the economy. He wants to make sure he can protect his supply of canned food & the stash of gold Glenn Beck convinced him to buy.

He always tells me about these things & even solicits my advice because I'm a hunter, Vietnam combat vet (qualified Expert on the .45 pistol, the M-14, the M-16 and the 106 Recoilless Rifle), and old-time handloader with a pretty good basic knowledge of firearms.

Not one of those weapons of his has any utility for hunting. He doesn't hunt, and the idea of field-dressing game makes him almost throw up. He's just buying guns as an expression of his chronic wingnut rage.

I have nothing against hunting, I'm just not an outdoorsman.

I don't recall the word "hunting" anywhere in the 2A.

The 2A is not about hunting, or target shooting or gun collecting. It is about having the means to defend yourself, loved ones, home and property against crime.

If you don't defend my RKBA for defense, don't expect me to defend your ability to go hunting.

Lot's of them come from a time when every firearm was used for hunting. It was also a time when the individual couldn't carry a firearm for self defense.

Traditional conservation groups in an attempt to enable their agenda, which has weakened the constituency supporting outdoor activities.

one I have been discussing back home for quite awhile, there is a flip side. First, anti gun groups want prohibiton. VPC, according to Wikipedia, wants to go as far as archery. Today's hunting rifle is tomorrow's "sniper rifle". Second, stricter gun laws would reduce funding to many environmental projects because the federal sales tax is earmarked for those. I don't see the general fund making up for that.
