The Humorous Paranoia of the Gun-Rights Folks

An op-ed by Warren Thomas in the Daily Republic. http://www.mitchellrepublic.com/event/account:login/desturl/event/article/id/71834/

What Democrats usually ignore is the deviousness with which President Obama, a consistent anti-gun advocate, plans to assault our Second Amendment rights.

By winning re-election Obama will have the freedom to bypass Congress without that nagging problem of being responsible to American voters. He can simply impose restrictive executive firearms orders.

Historically, at least two things immediately occur whenever legitimate governments fall to despots — guns are confiscated and voting is eliminated. We yet have a few days to prevent that from happening, but only a few days.

We often hear this kind of nonsense, but I'm wondering, how can a democratically conducted presidential election ever be confused with a "legitimate government falling to despots?"

Are the gun-rights folks so infantile that when they disagree with someone's politics they resort to calling them names?

Another oddity in their continual bashing of the possibility of gun confiscations is this. Did England and Australia become tyrannical? Did they do away with voting? Have they begun to round up their undesirables into concentration camps?

No, of course not. So, even if the unthinkable happens in the US and the 2nd Amendment is abolished or eliminated, and all the guns are rounded up and destroyed, tyranny would not follow. The Republic would endure. Only the ego maniacal gun-rights fanatics think it all depends on them.

What's your opinion? Please leave a comment.

I am hard pressed to think of a bigger bunch of bullshit. The concept sure upped gun sales the last time though! For awhile, you couldn't buy ammo to save your life. Fortunatly for me, I already had several thousand rounds stockpiled. Funny, I still have most of em so I should be good for this erection too.

you buy ammo in bulk twice a year and save hundreds of dollars. Basic economics.

Besides, a day at the range can use up a couple of hundred rounds - even more if I am practicing for a competition. Considering that there are four shooters in my house, I use every method I can to reduce ammo costs.

If you like to shoot, buying ammo by the case is no different than buying toilet paper in bulk from costco. It's much cheaper in bulk. But apparently you see a difference. To me it's just hardware. Like buying a case of nails.

or at best a scant handful of handworked nails of inferior metals.

They never imagined the factories (yes plural!) that we'd have today churning out nails in every conceivable size, shape, and quantity.

1/2 inch? You got it.

3/4 inch brass? No problem.

1 and 1/2 inch galvanized? You don't even need to show an ID.

I've seen nails as long as 6 inches. They put them in stores where anyone, even children, could walk in without a police escort.

Now I'm not saying ban nails. But couldn't we tax them so they're prohibitively expensive? Maybe 100 bucks per? Nail fetishists could still indulge in their fantasies (perhaps in some sort of regulated carpentry club). But for the rest of us it would mean we no longer live in constant fear of the literally dozens of serious injuries caused by nails every second (probably).

/did you know Halliburton used nails extensively in their Iraq construction contracts? Yeah, that's military grade shit right there.

... at the time of the writing of the Constitution, sailors headed to the South Seas would stockpile nails to use as barter with native women for sex (because of the rarity of nails in the South Seas).

So, anyone with more than a specified amount of nails could successfully be prosecuted for conspiracy to prostitution.

This is somewhat smaller than a common construction brick. You can buy 2000 rounds for less than $100. It's also quite common to buy other calibers in bulk, as it's long-term less expensive, and will help get one through periods of shortages, whether natural or artifical.

I'd say it's a great deal less "odd" than haveing hundreds or thousands of small pieces of printed paper, with used glue on one side and adulterated by ink on the other side, stuck into binders and placed on shelves.

YMMV. In fact, YMMBI.

Depends on your definitions and tolerances. Both of those countries put up with social and legal restrictions that the great majority of U.S. Americans would never tolerate. I'd say they are certainly closer to tyranny than we are. And far less equiped to fight it if it becomes more pervasive.

Are the gun-rights folks so infantile that when they disagree with someone's politics they resort to calling them names?

So typical of what most on his side of this issue think and do, they just don't usually do in it the same sentence...most, at least, have the decency of a few sentences brake between accusing the "gun-rights folks" of name calling before actually calling them names.

Another oddity in their continual bashing of the possibility of gun confiscations is this. Did England and Australia become tyrannical? Did they do away with voting? Have they begun to round up their undesirables into concentration camps?

There is almost a sexual aspect to this fantastic rant..like the writer is envisioning all this happening before his eyes...disregarding all reality on the issue...you know, the reality that there isn't even traction for any of this silliness right here on DU in GD, let alone among the public at large. No, pretty sure this is the dumbest piece I've read in quite some time..

Further, your words, "Always ths Same from the Gun Clutching Crowd: Gun control advocates are stupid. It's the best they can do.", are a response to my words calling "stupid" someone calling others "infantile"..LOL..get it?...~snork~
