Queens man busted with massive arsenal, mountain of ammo in his apartment

An eccentric Queens man was busted Friday for having an arsenal of illegal weapons — from handguns to machetes — and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his apartment, police and neighbors said.

Michael Millazzo, 53, of Shore Blvd. in Astoria, was arrested by cops investigating reports of shots fired in the air in front of his home on Aug. 26.

He was collared early Friday morning and cops recovered two handguns, 26 magazines, 10,537 rounds of ammunition, 32 machetes, 60 knives, 16 air pistols, an air rifle, seven tasers, eight brass knuckles, nine batons and 10 handcuffs, upon executing a search warrant.

-- snip --

The door to Millazzo’s apartment was plastered with military and weapons-related stickers including ones that read “Member, National Rifle Association,” “Proud to Have Served in the U .S. Armed Services,” a bull's-eye target and “CheaperThanDirt.com,” an online weapons and ammunition store.

It just sits there, inert, all day long.

Unless you actually put it in a gun, and then it really doesn't matter if one has 10K+, because no-one can carry that much ammo. Unless, maybe, it's .22 rimfire.

I thought they said an arsenal? They rest of his arsenal is just crap. Even the 10,000 rnds of ammo is not any concern. Sounds like he has a .22 pistol. Most people that shoot. 22 usually has several thosand on hand .

Is this simply another case of "poutrage"? I think so. The real story here is the shots fired.

10.5k rounds of ammunition and only two handguns. Assuming no time to reload, it would take an hour and a half of constant firing from both guns to run through 10.5k rounds. Can we agree that 10.5k sounds like a lot but has no real bearing on anything? He might as well have had a million rounds. With only two handguns, it really makes no difference.

32 machetes and 60 knives. This guy would be a player in the Congo. Not so much in NYC.

16 air pistols and an air rifle. Seriously?

Seven tasers. I suppose that if he was some taser ninja he cold use two at a time. Otherwise, seven is no different than one.

Eight brass knuckles. Was he a Jet or a Shark?

Nine batons and ten handcuffs. Maybe he had a law enforcement fetish, but neither of these qualify for "arsenal" status.

So, what we really have here is a slightly eccentric (by some standards) collector with two handguns and some ammo.

In People v Campos, 2012 NY Slip Op 02267, an interesting scenario evolved. There, the defendant sought to overturn his conviction for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree for possessing a machete. More specifically, he argued the evidence did not establish his unlawful intent.

Heck, when I go the range I routinely bring 500 rounds or more in a simple handheld lunchbox.

I've got about 5,000 cartridges of various calibers at home, plus enough powder and lead to make 10,000 more.

I must say, the guy has an impressive knife and BB-gun collection, but I've got 10 times as many firearms as this guy has in his "arsenal".

Some people like to collect stamps. Others weapons. So what?
