Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumWhy is the NRA so much like Al Qaeda?
This reaction by the leading gun nuts is typical. During the immediate period following gun bloodbaths, they use the time to fire up the NRA membership with threats that this will cause a wave of new gun control laws taking away their firearms. That is designed to sell more guns, which is their basic goal since gun manufacturers are the major financial supporters of the NRA. Not caring about innocent people killed, obvious by their silence other than they are sorry.
In doing the numbers, I came up with a figure of 5,000 Americans that Al Qaeda has killed directly. Perhaps more have died indirectly, but the 5,000 figure seems to be an agreed upon amount. Now, lets look at the other side of the picture which involves the National Rifle Assn. (NRA) and its lobbying efforts to make guns available to anyone in the United States that wants them, including the Seung-Hui Chos, Jared Loughners, James Holmes, and Wade Michael Pages.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which is the best source of statistics on gun deaths, there are 31,347 firearm deaths a year which equals 10.2 deaths per 100,000 population. And thats every year. There have been 432 deaths caused by guns in the U.S. just since March of this year when I started my Monthly Shooting Report. My numbers reflect only what is reported by the media, missing several shootings, but are still astounding.

(17,502 posts)it comes out to something like 3-4 per hundred thousand. There is no historical evidence that changes in gun laws will affect either suicide rates or murder rates. Based on stricter gun laws being passed in Canada and Australia, gun suicides dropped slightly. The suicide rate did not. The murder rate was not affected.

That's true as long as you ignore every country on earth except the USA, and most of the historical record of the USA as well.
So, other than those things, you're right.

(17,493 posts)Federal Assault Weapons Ban
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) (or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act) was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law in the United States that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms, so called "assault weapons". There was no legal definition of "assault weapons" in the U.S. prior to the law's enactment. The 10-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton the same day. The ban only applied to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment.
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision. There have been multiple attempts to renew the ban,[1] but no bill has reached the floor for a vote.

Since 1986 the practice of states allowing honest citizens to carry handguns either concealed or openly has changed dramatically.
Concealed carry in the United States
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports/ptd_state_totals
Concealed carry, or CCW (carrying a concealed weapon), refers to the practice of carrying a handgun or other weapon in public in a concealed manner, either on one's person or in proximity.
While there is no federal law specifically addressing the issuance of concealed carry permits, 49 states have passed laws allowing citizens to carry certain concealed firearms in public, either without a permit or after obtaining a permit from local government and/or law enforcement.[1] Illinois is the only state without such a provision. The states give different terms for licenses or permits to carry a concealed firearm, such as a Concealed Handgun License/Permit (CHL/CHP), Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW), Concealed (Defensive/Deadly) Weapon Permit/License (CDWL/CWP/CWL), Concealed Carry Permit/License (CCP/CCL), License To Carry (Firearms) (LTC/LTCF), Carry of Concealed Deadly Weapon license (CCDW), Concealed Pistol License (CPL), etc. Thirteen states use a single permit to regulate the practices of both concealed and open carry of a handgun.
Some states publish statistics indicating how many residents hold permits to carry concealed weapons, and their demographics. For example, Florida has issued 2,031,106 licenses since adopting its law in 1987, and had 843,463 licensed permit holders as of July 31, 2011.[2] Reported permit holders are predominantly male.[3] Some states have reported the number of permit holders increasing over time.[4] "With hard numbers or estimates from all but three of the 49 states that have laws allowing for issuance of carry permits, the GAO reports that there were about 8 million active permits in the United States as of December 31, 2011. That's about a million more than previous estimates by scholars." [5]

From November 30, 1998 to July 31, 2012 at total of 150,009,381 NICS background checks were run by the FBI involving the sale of firearms. While this does not accurately represent just how many firearms have been sold during this period it is obviously that firearm sales have skyrocketed in recent years. So we no longer have a Federal Assault Weapons Ban, legal concealed carry has swept across our nation and firearms are selling at record levels. Surely, if what you believe is true, violent crime involving the use of firearms would also be rising at a dramatic rate. However it actually peaked in 1993.
Firearm-related crime has plummeted since 1993.
Nonfatal firearm-related crime has declined since 2000.
After peaking in 1993, the number of gun crimes reported to police declined and then stabilized at levels last seen in 1988.
http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/glance/guncrime.cfm
Our nation's crime rate has dropped to levels last seen in the 60s. I'm not arguing that more guns = less crime, but pointing our that more guns have not caused more crime.
Crime in the United States
Crime statistics for the United States are published annually by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Uniform Crime Reports which represents crimes reported to the police. The Bureau of Justice Statistics conducts the annual National Crime Victimization Survey which captures crimes not reported to the police.
In 2009 America's crime rate was roughly the same as in 1968, with the homicide rate being at its lowest level since 1964. Overall, the national crime rate was 3466 crimes per 100,000 residents, down from 3680 crimes per 100,000 residents forty years earlier in 1969 (-9.4%).[1

Obviously gun crime in lower in nations such as the U.K. because of strong gun control laws however the violent crime rate in the U.K is actually higher than in the United States. (I should note that it is not wise to compare crime rates between different nations as definitions and reporting requirements differ.) However:
The most violent country in Europe: Britain is also worse than South Africa and U.S.
By James Slack
UPDATED: 18:14 EST, 2 July 2009
Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.
Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.
***snip***
The U.S. has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609.

(1,353 posts)You would know that Hitler did NOT disarm the German people. For one thing...the German people were pro-Hitler. I believe they elected him, didn't they? He wasn't just foisted on them...he was very, very popular. And.....he made the gun laws more lax.
Also, if the government decides to break bad on us...good luck with your shitty lil handguns and rifles against an Abrahms tank. Or a big ass bomb dropped from a drone flying at 35,000 feet. If our government goes against us, there won't be a damn thing you'll be able to do about it. Get over it.

(17,502 posts)it isn't that hard to kill a tank. One is with an 800 dollar rocket, the other is to cut the supply line. Their MPG is measured in gallons per mile.
As for taking out the air power, target tank farms and cut the ability for spare parts to get to the maintenance squadrons.
Amateurs and mall ninjas talk about tactics, professionals talk about logistics.
Edit to add: That is why the Afrika Korps used bio-diesel after the US and UK cut off their supply lines to the coast. Without cooking grease from the mess halls, Rommel would have a fleet of lawn art.

(18,479 posts)1. (Hitler did NOT disarm the German people) - From what I've read of most other pro-RKBA posters in this group, they know that.
2. (big ass bomb dropped from a drone flying at 35,000 feet) - The MQ-1 and MQ-9 have service ceilings of about 25,000 feet. The RQ-170 flies around twice that high but carries no bombs "big ass" or otherwise. I will pass on to the resistance movements in Afghanistan (oh wait, the Soviets gave up) and Vietnam (oh wait, the US gave up) and France (oh wait, Germany gave up) that rifles and handguns are useless.
Have a nice day, and get over it.
