A 13-year-old boy and 29-year-old man were killed in separate South and West side shootings and 13 others were wounded in shootings that stretched from Montrose Avenue south to 97th Street between 6:20 p.m. Saturday and 2:45 a.m. Sunday, according to authorities.

A handful of the shootings were gang related, at least two of the teens shot were playing basketball and had no gang or criminal history and one of the men shot was at an after party for a funeral, police said.

The youngest of the men and boys wounded overnight - a 13-year-old - died after getting shot in the 6200 block of South Rhodes Avenue, police said. The boy was at a party with his 19-year-old sister when a fight broke out between males at the party about 1:20 a.m. The two ran from the fight but someone pulled out a gun and shot, striking the boy, police said. He and his sister ran until the boy laid down on the sidewalk until a Chicago Fire Department ambulance made it to the scene. Neither of the siblings has a documented gang affiliation, police said. He was pronounced dead after 3 a.m. He lived in the 6500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, about 4.5 miles west of where he was shot. A man was shot in the same block the night before.

The fact that some of them are willing to go somewhere else like Indiana, buy guns and bring them back into Illinois illegally proves it.

They can't seem to hit another gang member without hitting three or four bystanders at the same time.

There are times when I think we could cut down on the carnage, at least a little, by taking a few leading gang bangers to the range and at least teaching them to shoot straight.

At least Capone and his ilk made sure they didn't shoot citizens to turn the general population against them.

Unhappily though, we live in a state where the reaction by several political types, to the execution style shootings of 5 women at the Lane Bryant store a few years ago was; "Thank heavens we don't have concealed carry or it could have been much worse".

This is a good summary of the politics of guns in Chicago. I'm guessing then that the perps in the Lane Bryant shootings walked over to the store with their guns carried openly.

It always indicates, at least to me, some brainless person that makes no distinction between a criminal and the law abiding. They behave as if everyone with a gun is either a criminal or a criminal in waiting.

Hell, we heard it right here after the Virginia Tech shootings about how "fortunate" it was that no one was armed or "it could have been much worse". How?!?!

I struggle to imagine anything could possibly be worse than being shot at point blank range in the back of the head by some criminal or insane person, unless it's waiting for your turn to be shot like the poor women at Lane Bryant or the Brown's Chicken massacre.

claim, inferred or explicit, that gun control correlates to gun violence from either side of the tedious gungeon debate, is highly suspect.

Nor from the comments that followed. Instead it seems to be the usual cherry picking of incidents done here by both sides to bolster their arguments. Glad you agree that there is no correlation to either an increase or decrease in gun violence associated with gun control legislation on a state or municipal level in this country.

Chicago has a bit of a gang problem, and that leads to...you guessed it..drugs. For some reason the government has LE people spread all over the globe trying to solve everyone else's problems for them, Honduras comes to mind. Meanwhile back at home bullets are flying and people are dying. Law abiding people can't walk the streets due to a fear of dying yet they are unable to arm themselves due to a never ending pile of gun laws. When asked I am sure the city leaders will tell you that tighter gun laws is the answer to the recent rash of shootings.
