A proposed SOP with a discussion about the name of this group

While there is a on going poll with a discussion about changing the SOP, I think a discussion about the actual wording is worthy of its own thread.

Here is the current SOP:

"Discuss gun control laws, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms for self-defense, and the use of firearms to commit crime and violence."

Here is a proposed SOP as written by petronius:

"Discuss all aspects of firearms use and ownership, including but not limited to gun control laws and policies, the Second Amendment, self-defense, crime and violence, safety and education, shooting sports, and collecting."

A tip of the the hat to CreekDog who pointed out the obvious that discussion of gun safety ought to be included.

As for the name, I think keeping the current one is okay as discussions on gun control and RKBA would still the primary focus of this group and it would remain under the Justice & Public Safety umbrella. Altough I'd be fine with changing it to "Guns", "Firearms" or even to "The Gungeon".

As is, it's almost like having an "Automobiles Forum" but the only thing we're allowed to discuss are motor vehicle laws, traffic fatalities and hit-and-run accidents.

5. There are lots of forums to discuss firearms

There are very few places on the internet to discuss firearms policy in the greater context of a Democratic point of view. I'm not opposed to 'gun porn' per se, I just appreciate that this forum is focused much more on the public policy aspects of firearms and gun control. My only fear would be that pure policy decisions get pushed aside by much more general interest firearms discussion that isin't very unique to DU.

name. It is disingenuous to do otherwise.

11. I prefer a name of 'Guns' or 'Firearms' - I prefer 'Gungeon' as an informal nickname

no matter the motivation an individual has in using it.

It seems to me that it's time for someone (Krispos?) to send some queries to the Admin. Specifically:

  1. What are the Admin feelings regarding a name/SoP change for a group like GC & RKBA?
  2. Is a ~ 70-30 vote enough evidence in support of a change (considering the apparent ideological split in the voting)?
  3. If a change is allowable, how do we make it happen?
Naturally I favor the Petronius/CreekDog draft SoP, but others may have other suggestions. If the answers from Admin permit a change, perhaps we'd need one last thread to solicit and vote on the candidate SoPs...

12. So, after a week and a half the poll settled in at 69% in favor of an expanded SoP

It certainly seems that all regular users of the group have had ample time to vote. I think it's time to approach Admin to find out if a change in the SoP is allowed, and if the >2/3 majority in the poll is sufficient justification. May I propose that Krispos as the host follows up with Admin on behalf of the Group?
