Can you tell me
1) What anti-gun organization you belong to?
2) Do you attend their meetings?
3) Do you contribute money to them?
3a) If so, how much?
4) Have you contacted legislators in your area/state about gun control measures?
4a) How were your proposals received?
4b) How many are moving forward?
4c) Were your proposals actually acknowledged?
Or do you just sit online and rail against those who actively protect gun rights?
Just curious.
By the way, I still have $1000 for anyone who can answer the question poised here:

I am anti-gun because of two words: Virginia Tech. Five years ago today. It directly affected my family. That's all you need to know.

(502 posts)That being said, there were numerous reasons this happened, like VA not submitting his mental health record to NICS, the campus police standing around with their thumbs up their ass waiting for the real police to get there meanwhile Cho had all the time in the world to continue murdering people, and that VT was a gun free zone so no other student or teacher was armed that day.
Did you notice that when finally confronted by armed individuals, I.E. police, he offed himself, so maybe, just maybe if a student or teacher had been armed that day, it might have turned out far different, however, we'll never know.

(57,936 posts)There are just a lot of paranoid gun-lovers who let their imaginations go wild.
Most people are not all that anti-gun. They just don't want to find a friendly gun in their face if they take a wrong turn on the way back home from the 7-11 some evening.
The NRA stirs up gun lovers by telling them they will lose their gun laws. Leave gun laws to local government, and most people will get laws that fit their communities and their situations.

I get up in the morning, put on two ammo belts, have a six-shooter on each hip and a rifle. And that's just for the morning walk to the bathroom.
I think I might need this lest some people out there think I'm serious.

(6,185 posts)Maybe those posts are all plants by that evil NRA?
But there's an anti gun movement.
They're just hard to find because they have no grass roots organizations, never actually contribute to any gun control organizations, can't be bothered to circulate petitions supporting what they claim they support and all they tend to do is whine about how horrible guns and the people that own and use them are.
They usually can't or won't see the difference between a law abiding gun owner that enjoys different shooting sports and a criminal.
But they know that one or two more gun laws will somehow make a difference, when the 20,000+ laws on the books now don't do what they want.
There's an anti gun movement, they just really suck at it.
orpupilofnature57
(15,472 posts)2 posts that call for a Ban on handguns ?
DonP
(6,185 posts)If you haven't seen them you either haven't been looking in the gungeon or refuse to accept the dream some people here embrace
There have been at least two or three demands that i can recall for complete bans on the manufacture and sale of all handguns in the last week and several demands for renewing the so called assault weapons ban in the last 24 hours, since it was part of the 2004 and 2008 party platform.
It's not at all uncommon for posters to say they "don't really want to take away anyone's guns", then demand that we renew the Assault Weapons ban in the same thread, as if that doesn't really count because "assault weapons" are icky.
I have to go now, but tomorrow AM if no one else has added cites I'll dig a few out.

(3,657 posts)And then there is this
"A new study out of UCLA suggests that when people wield a gun, they don't just feel bigger and stronger it makes others think they are bigger and stronger.
In the study, survey participants were asked to look at pictures of a hand holding various items, including a power drill, a caulk gun, a large saw and a .45-caliber handgun. When asked to guess the height, size and muscularity of the men behind the pictures, people thought the gun-wielding hand models were consistently taller, bigger and more muscular than the rest."

(4 posts)I mean your post seems a little paranoid,by the way that website quotes Glen Beck, i didn't go there looking for something saying they advocate anything, anywhere, anytime but i did go looking to see if there is anything they don't support and i couldn't find that.
I want to thank you i knew the NRA was a little extreme and politically leans right but i had no idea how far i mean Glen fucking Beck.I had always kinda thought they really cared about the second amendment and i didn't have a issue with that cause i am not anti gun just gun enforcement, i think its perfectly ok to have a automatic rifle if the FBI checks you out which is what we have today.but now i know they careless about protecting the second amendment then they do just electing republicans and selling guns, and that would not have been possible with out you.
So as of now i am more anti NRA then before i read your post, i had only minor issues with them before that.I am pro second amendment just with regulation..what are gun owners so afraid of?where is this powerful anti gun movement you speak of?I mean you can find people in this country who support and oppose anything thats easy but that doesn't mean they are a threat to you..

DonP
(6,185 posts)I kind off thought that would be the result.
I've been asking the same basic questions now for around a year and I have yet to have anyone brag about actually doing anything as simple as starting a petition. When I've asked for specific examples of what they actually do in the real world to support gun control, I get things like "I spend all my money paying my bills" or "I don't have time to go to any meetings" and my favorite, "I only vote for candidates that support gun control".
It's obviously far easier to "talk the talk" than actually get off your ass and do anything.
It seems their primary gun control "tactic" is to cut and paste articles online from newspapers and magazines that have a smaller circulation than the NRA has actual paid members East of the Mississippi.
But the good news ... if this group is typical ... it proves that gun control is a top down driven mentality with a lot of bobblehead followers that nod when they are supposed to and actually do nothing. Gun owners and other supporters of the entire Bill of Rights have little to fear in the way of new regulations generated from the average gun control supporter.

Hoyt
(54,770 posts)But they won't, so laws will need to be changed and they'll just need to suck it up and walk into a restaurant or other public building, parks, churches, etc., without their beloved lethal weapon.
DonP
(6,185 posts)The question wasn't about what can we "all" do to promote gun control. Many of us have no interest in more controls and are working to reduce the number of pointless gun laws already out there.
The question was to try and find out if any of the "enthusiastic" gun control supporter here ever do anything in the real world to support their point of view. The short answer appears to be - "Hell No". All talk and no walk.
The pro-second amendment side are all very busy doing things to support our point of view, often on a weekly basis. While you're off checking papers for people you suspect maybe carrying concealed, we out with our families at gun clubs, making new friends, shooting and spending our money on a regular basis on club memberships, ammunition, targets et. al. and many belong to and attend meetings of state and national shooting sports associations that are actively (and very successfully) lobbying to change the existing gun laws.
It's the gun control side that sitting with its thumb up its ass at keyboards whining and really doing nothing. That's why the idea of more gun control has become much more of a punchline in a bad joke than a viable political movement. It's quickly approaching the humor level of the "Flat Earth Society" press releases
Like I said above, Gun Control is obviously a top down movement, with no real grass roots support, run by a handful of 1%ers that have a shrinking army of willing and generally incapable bobblehead followers that do nothing but sit, nod, smile and whine online and in the occasional editorial. Not exactly a major political movement anyone has to worry about. But still offering frequent bursts of humor and over reaching rhetoric and for that we thank you.
