Texas boy dead, allegedly shot self with mom's gun

http://www.statesman.com/news/texas/texas-boy-dead-allegedly-shot-self-with-moms-2307927.html

TYLER, TEXAS — Investigators believe the 4-year-old son of an East Texas law officer had used her gun to fatally shoot himself.

Tyler police say Jaylen Johnson died Sunday afternoon in the apparent accidental shooting.

Smith County sheriff's Chief Deputy Bobby Garmon told KLTV-TV (http://bit.ly/HJ5GHE ) that the shooting happened in Officer Andrea Johnson's personal vehicle. She works at the Smith County jail but was not on duty at the time of the accident.

Authorities say the boy was dead on arrival at a Tyler hospital.

All deaths of children are tragic. I think American football has morphed into an incredibly barbaric sport. I remember watching high school games 30 years ago that were great, but the idea then was to score points, not to damage the other side. Rifle clubs and archery clubs are healthy outlets for kids primal energies. Much healthier than running in the street playing C&R, or C&I, or WW2 with toy guns.

It's a decades long struggle to raise consciousness, marginalize those who perversely rejoice in the epidemic of guns and ammo in the hands of the public, staff the courts with judges who will narrow the meaning of any such "right," and allow natural attrition to work its magic.

It's exactly like the civil rights movement. Heighten awareness of racial discrimination, ostracize those who engage in it, staff the courts with judges who will shape the law to discourage provincialism, and allow the integration mandate to work it magic.

And just like Jim Crow, America's gun problem is home grown. Not some sinister lunacy smuggled in from abroad.

Then the populace would have no reason to carry. Oops no, I forgot, some will always come up with a reason like fighting off the US military and 2A and killing rabid dogs and shooting naked guys with bows and killing kids who wear hoodies.

...it seemed to suggest that either you believe the police are incapable of protecting you, incapable of keeping public order, or could be used to enforce dictatorship? Considering some of the rhetoric that comes out of the gun culture it's a reasonable question. So what were you saying exactly?

But no, I won't do a call-out, even if juries tend to ignore them on DU3. I think that rule should have been carried over from DU2.

As to why? For a multitude of reasons. First, it's a constitutionally protected right, so they'd have to be morons to think that a constitutional amendment such as would be required would pass. Second, such idiots don't foresee the unintended consequences of their actions- such a disarmament would only affect those predisposed to follow the law. Criminals? Not so much. Third, even the whiff of such a stupid effort from our party would guarantee rethuglican federal electoral victories for a generation.

....like yours. Officers are presumably TRAINED on gun safety and if this family can have an accident ANY family can regardless of the training.

Trained. Presumably. Oh yeah.

I took a handgun class alongside an NYPD plainclothes cop who couldn't get his pistol back in his holster because his t-shirt tail kept getting stuck in with it. This was not a safe situation. He was a numb-nut. Numb-nuts exist, and they are impervious to training. The suggestion that because a numb-nut does something, anybody is likely to do it is ... stupid.

We were talking about police here, remember? Are you saying they shouldn't be armed?

If you're advocating increased firearms training with a higher required threshold of proficiency for police, then I'm with you 100%.

No, when it's a police officer, that passive voice comes out.
