Ownership of Full Auto Weapons?

I though you could only sell full auto weapons manufactured before 1986. I thought basically all the automatic weapons sold now were older weapons. And you could not buy new automatic weapons.

I must be wrong or confused because I was at a shooting range this weekend, The Scottsdale Gun Club, and they were renting machine guns like the FN SCAR and FN P90 that I am sure were made after 1986.

So how does a shooting range acquire newer full automatic guns legally?

1. I believe FFL Class 3 dealers can buy any automatic weapon.

Including new ones, regardless of age. It's only average citizens prevented from owning them.

(Not to be confused with Class 03, which is a whole different thing.)

Machine guns manufactured after the FOPA's enactment can be sold only to law enforcement and government agencies, exported, or held as inventory or "dealer samples" by licensed manufacturers and dealers.

They can't sell them to you, but they can rent them. Silly law.

If you are in the business of selling to .gov agencies, you need demo weapons so your customers can make informed decisions.

Is renting one to those who like to play with such things, in the spirit of a "dealer sample?" Sounds like pushing the envelop to me.

Fun, fun, fun!

Be sure to notify your nearest ATF agent that these people are pushing the envelope...and do get back to us and let us know how that works out...

and he inherited a lot of pretty cool things - including a full auto uzi that he let us shoot over the Thanksgiving weekend. Man that was fun. He doesn't do guns for money though - just for fun - but he's kept up with all the proper licenses. I bet in about a half hour we burned through a lot of dollars worth of ammo...

I'll tell ya this though - if/when zombie apocalypse comes, I'm hightailing it to his house.

I do believe the weapons must be relinquished when an SOT/FFL status is revoked or expired unless the item was purchased for demonstration purposes on behalf of an LEO/MIL agency.
