Southern Illinois Democrats blast Chicago gun bills

I guess these poor stupid guys don't know they must really be right wing nuts or shills for the ineffective NRA? There are a lot more "Downstate Dems" just like them too.

But to be consistent and not hypocritical, if most of the Arizona Democrats are against something, and we have to agree with them, then if the Illinois Democrats support something, like concealed carry, shouldn't we all support that too?

From the official Illinois Senate Democrat newsletter.

Southern Illinois Democrats blast Chicago gun bills

Benton, IL – State Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton), State Representative John Bradley (D-Marion), and State Representative Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) are furious that Chicago Democrats are trying to pass Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s anti-gun laws. The two measures passed a House committee late last week. One requires all FOID card holders to register their guns and pay a $20 per firearm fee (Rahm asked for $65 per firearm). The other charges a tax on ammunition. The majority of the money collected by the taxes goes to Chicago area programs.

“I’m spitting mad,” Forby said. “These Chicago politicians are trying to take our guns out of our hands. They’re trying to take money from Southern Illinois to pay for their own programs. It is our Constitutional right to own guns. The mayor of Chicago and his cronies may not respect the Constitution of the United States, but we do.”

All three Southern Illinois Democrats are strong advocates of allowing Illinoisans to carry concealed weapons.
“I think the time has come for conceal carry in Illinois,” Bradley added.

2. Dumping Cook County has been a popular idea since the 1870's

Every few years it comes up again, usually when the city demands another $300+ million or so from the state to balance some part of their budget.

3. Sounds remarkably like our relationship with New York City.

Although with NYC, the catch is the city actually provides much more than it's share of the state tax revenues. But they make up for that by basically treating the rest of the state as disposable.

6. Illinois dumping Cook County is like the Enterprise ejecting the warp engine.

Might solve an immediate annoyance but the rest of the state would be limping along like Mississippi-lite.

8. Not so much anymore

It's still a big chunk of revenue.

But with the collapse of several major employers in Chicago/Cook County (Sears, Sara Lee, Kraft/Oscar Mayer/General Foods etc.) Chicago is becoming less and less the engine that drives Illinois business and revenue.

Commercial real estate occupancy rates are a decent measure of business and revenue potential and they were falling in Chicago for years. Last year they finally started to turn up and are back at 2005 levels again as of November of 2011.

When you combine that with the flight of companies out of state to avoid the new income and corporate tax burdens and the massive tax breaks that Quinn, Madigan and company have to hand out to keep the high profile ones here, the revenue base has been steadily shifting downstate to the Peoria area with Caterpillar and John Deere. And even they are not building any new plants in Illinois, let alone Cook County.

I'm not sure how much longer Rahm can avoid the obvious budget disaster without saying anything bad about the Daley "management style".

That's why when Ford adds a 3rd shift to the Torrance avenue plant, Quinn make sit a major press event.

9. That's why I pulled it from the Official Illinois Senate Democrat newsletter

I found the story in several other sources too but I thought coming from the Official Newsletter, it might shut off some of the usual claptrap.

Interesting, that none of the usual "All Real Democrats support gun control" crowd have shown up?
