Gun Activists Plan to Stage a Fake Mass Shooting This Weekend

Gun rights activists in Texas are planning to stage a mock mass shooting at the University of Texas this weekend in protest of both gun-free zones and President Barack Obama's continued calls for tougher gun control legislation.

According to the website Statesman, gun rights supporters will begin the day by marching through Austin with loaded weapons and conclude their walk with a "theatrical performance."

A spokesman for the two participating gun rights groups, Come and Take It Texas and DontComply.com, told the site the event will involve using fake blood and bullhorns to mimic gun shot noises.

"In the wake of yet another gun free zone shooting, Obama is using it to aggressively push his gun confiscation agenda," a Facebook page for the event read. "Now is the time to stand up, take a walk, speak out against the lies and put an end to the gun free killing zones."

In June, state lawmakers made Texas the eighth state in the country to allow students to carry concealed weapons on campus grounds. Saturday's event comes amid ongoing concerns about the new law.

"We want criminals to fear the public being armed," spokesman Matthew Short said. "An armed society is a polite society."

UT Austin Says Planned Mock Mass Shooting Protest Would Be Trespassing

The University of Texas at Austin issued a response late Wednesday to reports of an Saturday protest planned by open-carry activists for its campus, warning the group that such activity could be considered trespassing.

The Open Carry Walk and Crisis Performance Event would employ actors "shot" by fake shooters with cardboard weapons who would bleed fake blood, as well as use the sounds of gunshots via a bullhorn, according to initial reports.

UT Austin spokesperson J.B. Bird said Wednesday night in a statement that the university was aware of the media reports. Bird said university property was not "open to outside groups for assembly, speech, or other activities, including theatrical performances," although university staff and students could engage in those activities on campus.

He said outside groups such as the Westboro Baptist Church have asked to use the school's facilities for protests in the past but have been turned away.

"We suggest that any outside organizations planning such events on campus relocate them to other space where they would be allowed," Bird said.
