If only guns could be dropped as quickly as the Confederate flag

Always in this country, the worst that can happen brings out the best in us. It happened on Sept. 12, 2001, when New York City started to get back up. It happens this time in South Carolina, where the Confederate flag, a symbol of racism and hate, finally comes down once and for all. From now on, the only people still clinging to the notion of that flag honoring courage of Southern soldiers will sound like weird, bigoted members of the Flat Earth Society.

The flag was lowered Friday morning. Seven members of the South Carolina Highway Patrol Honor Guard, two of them black, did the honors, less than a month after Dylann Roof allegedly murdered nine people, including the pastor, of the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. It all happened because righteous Americans, white and black, stood up. The flag goes to a Confederate relic room in a museum down the road, relic being the key word.

The families of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary wish it was as easy to see change on guns as it was with a flag that once was used to rally the Ku Klux Klan.

Nothing about a moment like this brings back the dead or changes what happened at that prayer meeting. Nothing changes how many school shootings and church shootings we have had in this country since Sandy Hook, even as the gun lobby continues to run onto the field flying the flag of a Second Amendment, the original intent of which is constantly misrepresented, and prostituted, in America.

The state should not be in the business of endorsing items that are considered hate speech and I am glad the flag came down. But I am against a ban on that flag on first amendment grounds. Let the knuckeldraggers show who they are. I am for reasonable gun restrictions but not bans.

My guess you will not comment like the other 500 plus times you have done the Google cut and paste in this group. I see you could not even put it in the group you host? Why not enough traffic?

They post cartoons and what they think are cute and snarky bumper sticker phrases online, but they never reach for their checkbooks or get off the couch to do anything in the real world.

I've seen at least a hundred posts on DU over the years demanding the repeal of the 2nd amendment.

Never saw one that had any petitions circulating to actually do anything about it.

The OP and his ilk like to post stuff, but never do anything of consequence. That's why they are pretty much a joke as far as the "Activism" part of their Bansalot SoP goes.

And I vividly remember that I was working from home that afternoon and tearing up when they (wrongly) announced that she had passed away. Her position on gun control - and mental health services - is something that should draw bipartisan approval. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2015/03/04/gabby-giffords-gun-control-congress-mark-kelly/24388411/. Extremists on both sides of the issue have poisoned the well, preventing even incremental and needed progress on this issue.

I will stop at a laundry or a neighborhood store. Light a moth to a light their bulletin boards attract my attention - everything from broken swing sets to baby goats, used mattresses to broken boats is posted there. Every surge in posts here from the control side brings a smile to my face as I close my eyes and think about all that junk. Is there a correlation between those posting on cork boards and those posting here?

... you'll notice that there isn't a mass movement going on to de-flag the South.

Trash cans aren't filing with Rebel flags, nor are flag-adorned trinkets and decorations. The people of the South are not, as a group, shedding their symbols.

Likewise, despite what Hartford has done, the people of Connecticut are not melting down their guns en masse.

Wal-Mart stopped selling Rebel flag merchandise, Dick's stopped selling AR-15s. Neither action will affect the general public much.

as quickly as the Confederate flag.

Oh.......wait a minute. The Confederate flag hasn't actually been dropped, and the one that has certainly wasn't dropped quickly.

Never mind.
