Responsible Gun Owner Shows Off Gun, Accidently Shoots Daughter | Crooks and Liars

http://crooksandliars.com/2015/01/responsible-gun-owner-shoots-his-daughter

Here's today's installment from Texas:

The Dallas Morning News reported that 53-year-old Steven Johnson had taken out his gun at his home in Colleyville to show it to visitors.

According to Colleyville city spokesperson Mona Gandy, the gun discharged and Johnson’s 10-year-old daughter was struck by a bullet that went through a wall of the home.

The girl was taken to Baylor Emergency Medical Center by her mother, where police were contacted. She was then flown to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Her condition was not disclosed.

I'm sure that dad feels awful for accidentally shooting his daughter. But this happens every day, and they've still got their guns close by. It's hard to understand.

If there are, will he still keep the damn gun that he almost killed his daughter with? And don't jump me for the "almost killed" phrase. Even if she is not in critical condition, she could have been killed if the bullet had hit a vital organ.

I don't have a problem with responsible gun ownership, but the gun control laws we have now don't do much to keep guns out of the hands of irresponsible people.

houses of democracy with a small platoon strength army of open carry and openly angry and belligerent responsible gun owners with semi-automatic machines that are guns,.......and also bringing your kids....or any of the insane killings of innocents we see daily in America.

Think about it..daily, hourly for all we know..how on God's wonderful creation did he intend to create intentionally self inflicted mayhem like this? Whatever the validity of the right to bear arms into houses of worship, drink and law, how is this an acceptable price to pay for.....what? For ducking what?

Self defence. Defence against tyranny. Defence against being wanting to admit killing living things gives you a thrill? FOOD. Really, food? For how many do you need a killing machine for food? If you live in Deep Alaska, yes, I get your point, believe me, I do, but I do not get your nihilistic outrage.

Defence against the undercover evil in the WH, who is, in FACT, now diminished to one third of the actual government, a veto pen, and as many Executive Orders and Presidential Memos, whatever the fuck they actually, legally are? Is that it?

OPINION Answer to my own question: As much as the corporate owned and Wall Street financied media will let him get away with before they try to ring the bell, and not just whistle the dog.

Fox rang the bell long ago, now CNN is clearly fully Foxified and ringing another bell with the same message....Obama is the cause of this FEAR and Republicans will save you.

Is 30,000 gun deaths a year, half by suicide, leaving for the morgue thousands and thousands only slightly less tragic gun deaths.... acceptable?

"Truth has to play some role in any debate", as the wonderful mayor of Paris said, the woman who is about to sue the racist and violence inciting Fox News for criminal defamation. French style, for honor.

I shall have to inform Webster's Dictionary there is a unique local defintion for "irresponsible people", getting back to my point.

Because the adults say so.

That math you speak of:

If we multiply all gun deaths by a factor of ten, to 300000, and assume every death involved a different gun,

It amounts to a tenth of a percent of guns, involved in deaths.

That's right freddy, .01 percent of all guns in America are involved in gun deaths.

You can hunt with the 10mm and if outfitted with a proper optic you could deer hunt within say 40 yards. Naw for a GP hunting sidearm it's mostly for those moments when a coyote happens by while you have a bow. It's also nice just to have a little more powerful self defense firearm while out in the mountains. Now if you're fishing I normally just carry my SR22 while in the Kayak. For the ATV or Dirtbike I'll carry my LCP, and when Jeepin' the Shield. A sidearm for every activity...

coyotes have invaded the urban centers, see Florida. In my hometown, moose and deer do the same. When I was a kid (and still some degree) pronghorn would graze off lawns in the winter. Of course mt. lions would follow them looking for food. the increase in wolf population kind of cured that (and there has been a drop in pronghorn population, not near as bad as the near extinction in the 1920s). In fact about six moths ago, some asshole poached a deer while it was grazing on a doctor's office lawn (second poached in city limits.) He was caught and charged and convicted of: no hunting licence, out of season, discharging a firearm in city limits without a good reason, wanton waste (basically wasting food, that is actually the stiff penalty most serious charge.), firing across a road (well, street) and shooting from a vehicle (not within a few exceptions).
They probably threw a few more that I'm not aware of like brandishing and public endangerment. While our county jail is cleaner and more humane than Rikers Island or Sheriff Joe's tent city, it still isn't my idea of a cool vacation spot. Oh, and the gun he used and the vehicle he drove went to auction.

If you are venturing into coyote territory, a gun is a handy thing to have. Otherwise, a big stick should suffice. I've never been attacked by coyotes, but have been attacked by domestic dogs. I was attacked by 2 boxers in a park. They came straight at me going full tilt. Fortunately, I had a weighty SLR camera, which I swung vertically and caught the lead dog hard under its jaw. The second I caught in the same place with my left foot in the same place. A goal kick.
Now, I carry a big stick when out walking or hiking.

"If you are venturing into coyote territory..."

Its not a question of "venturing into it". Its a question of almost never venturing OUT of it.

We LIVE in it.

I have two large packs come through my yard nightly. Its been like that for 11 years.

Contrary to popular belief amongst the usual suspects, there is life outside of urban centers and sailboats.

My office, in the home of my business partner, is in a similar situation to yours. Though the yard is fenced. So the coyotes don't get into the house and the dog can roam freely in the yard. The coyotes in the area lure dogs all the time. Fences come in real handy. There is a trail head 50 yards from the house into wilderness. That's what I mean when I say "venturing into coyote territory". I hike it often and always take the dog and a stick.
I spend half the year in the mountains, my friend, so I'm quite familiar with the non-urban environment. We have a lot of wild boar where I spend the summers, along with vipers and packs of dogs.

What he did was very irresponsible.

Actual responsible gun owners would have never had the thing loaded, and probably wouldn't have been showing it off.

In my family, the girl and the mom and anyone else would have been well trained in proper and safe handling.

Very sad, this negligent discharge.
