Gun Control & RKBA

After all, how can you have a civilized debate about gun control without agreement on the facts?
GUN VIOLENCE in the UNITED STATES
Some Indicative Data:
Gun Ownership
The US has an estimated 283 million guns in civilian hands
Each year about 4.5 million firearms, including approximately 2 million handguns, are sold in the United States
An estimated 2 million second hand firearms are sold each year
The percentage of American households with a gun has been steadily declining (high of 54% in 1977 to 33% in 2009)
The average number of guns per owner has increased from 4.1 in 1994 to 6.9 in 2004.
Sources: Injury Prevention (2007); ATF (2000); National Opinion Research Center (2008); Pew Research Center (2009)
Gun Deaths:
More than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country
More than 30 people are shot and murdered each day
1/2 of them are between the ages of 18 and 35
1/3 of them are under the age of 20
Homicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year-olds
And the primary cause of death among African Americans of that age group
........................
Much more facts kind of stuff at the link, because liberals love facts....guns and other killing machine, not so much.

(9,951 posts)Polls have no way of accurately determining this, I'll bet that most gun owners wouldn't tell an anonymous person that they have a firearm in the home, also, that 30,000 number? 2/3 of those are suicides.
The leading cause of homicides among 15-24 year olds is due to the drug wars among gangs.
That whole article is an anti gun slant.

(68,644 posts)Could it be that if they included that figure people might be less fearful, and more concerned about the mental state of people and possibly look for solutions that address depression and treatment?
Could it be that they want to skew the presentation of facts to fit an agenda?
Could be.

(9,951 posts)According to the FBI's UCR, homicide rates have been cut in half in the last 20 years, but the article makes no mention of that.
And the polling done? I'd like to see how the questions were worded, I suspect they were worded to get the responses that the authors wanted.
I'm calling bullshit on this article.

than what you're trying to push here.
At least in this group we get push back on your nonsense, unlike your other protected group where you all walk in lockstep.

Those NRA shills at the FBI or heedinggodscall.com?

(23,946 posts)up to date facts we can all agree on is because of the prohibition on research by government imposed by a push long ago political push from you know who, but that has been changing and factual gathering regarding firearms is no longer taboo.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)that's been debunked many times, as you are well aware of, the CDC was prevented from using the stats as an anti gun message, they were not prevented from collecting unbiased data, which they did throughout the years.

(512 posts)Laws already exist to try and keep legal guns from falling into the hands of people who shouldn't have them. If we funded the ATF at the level they request, they could actually effectively enforce those laws.
And just like anything that comes from the NRA gets dismissed by your side. When you tell me any numbers you are using came from the Brady foundation...I similarly dismiss.

(1,401 posts)An estimated 300 million firearms in civilian hands; 30,000 deaths (2/3 are suicides) comes out to 1% of the guns owned are used in a manner that results in death. Clearly, the problem is not the number of firearms but a small percentage of the people who possess, whether legally or illegally, some firearms. The facts are clear, the overwhelming majority of firearms are never used for any criminal purpose. Resources would be better focused on those people who misuse firearms, not the tools themselves.
Regarding firearms used for self-defense; it is possible to present a firearm for defense and never fire it and those stats are, strangely, not reported.

(1,401 posts)You cannot dispute the facts, so you attack the source. Are the numbers correct? If so, then they speak for themselves. If not, then dispute the numbers. Sadly, you cannot and therefore you engage the logical fallacy of attacking the source of the facts.

(18,482 posts)...in private hands worldwide and half of those are here in the US. One of the big questions is 'Why aren't half of all the murders, worldwide, here in the US?'
