Virginia set to remove limit on monthly gun purchases

By Matthew A. Ward

PORTSMOUTH, Va | Mon Feb 13, 2012 4:38pm EST

(Reuters) - Virginia is set to remove a limit of one handgun purchase per month that has been on the books for 19 years, one of a host of pro-gun measures moving through the legislature.

The state Senate voted 21-19 to amend Virginia law to eliminate the prohibition that was enacted in 1993 in an effort to curb gun-smuggling operations.

The vote confirmed a version of the measure passed by the House of Delegates in a 66-32 vote earlier this month, and now sends it to Republican Governor Bob McDonnell's desk.

Governor spokesman Jeff Caldwell told Reuters that McDonnell plans to sign the bill into law...

reporting of more than one in five days still stands, not that it really matters. The average age of a crime gun is 11-14 years.

and it simply served no positive purpose. If there is no demonstrable good (compelling state interest), any restriction should go. Gun control groups like MAIG claim that there is an "iron pipeline" but provide no evidence of any such thing. According to the ATF, the typical crime gun is between 11-14 years old, they are not purchased new then trafficked to NY. If you know of any such thing, call the ATF hotline and turn them in.
The federal reporting requirement (more than one handgun a week must be reported to the ATF) is still in place. In all fairness, it affects very few people. I only bought more than one pistol once. The only other person I know of was my brother (actually my mom, since he was only 19. He carried a gun where ever he went and broke up bar fights, but mom had to buy ammo for another two years. Federal law. In Canada, he would be able to buy his own handguns at 18.) when he joined the local PD (my hometown required you to buy your own guns, Wyoming is like that.) when he bought his service revolver and off duty revolver the same day.

Edit to add: some of NYC's crime guns come out of the police armory, Bloomburg needs to clean his own house before bitching about anyplace else.

...how this law was an effective deterrent to crime. Seems like a waste of legislation that should have never passed in the first place.

that don't actually address the problem, and shows no demonstrable benefit is not a progressive (or at least liberal value).

On fixing that problem shortly.....either I'll buy another of the same model or a 220 so I'll have a 45 for home defense and plinking.

Who to hell really thinks someone that traffics firearms (if it really happens in Virginia) fills out 40 4473s a month to lose 100-200 bucks on the resale.
