Federal law allows the sale of a long gun or a handgun between private parties of the same state....

as long as the purchaser is 18 years of age or older for long guns, 21 for handguns.

It is not a loophole. It is federal law.

End of a over discussed dramatic non-story.

Also, obviously both the buyer and the seller must be legally able to possess the weapon. But otherwise correct.

Private sale age regulation is up to the state, and in many is 18.

I knew that the minimum federal age of POSSESSION was 18, but I was under the impression that 21 was the universal age to purchase regardless of source.

However, you linked to an empty site. I believe you meant to link to Handgunlaw.us.

In MI. I can sell a used handgun, in a private transaction, to a person who is 18. You need to be 21 to buy from a FFL holder.

In Illinois, you must possess a FOID (Firearms Owner ID) to own a firearm, and you must see and record its details before selling a firearm to a private individual. Failure to do so is a misdemeanor.

Pistols require class A or B. Long guns an 'fid' card.

You need a license to own it legally.

Then there are all kinds of laws about the guns themselves but thats another story for another day.

Utterly predictable for the most part, except that they did go interview the sellers right after the transaction. It's a bit "gotcha", but the interviewer didn't spout a lot of holier-than-thou crap.

In lots of places when a family is having a yard sale, one of the things they'll advertise is a gun or two. Ooooo.....

insert scare music here

Speaking of music, I thought the score of the O'Donnell piece was pretty un-subtle.

O'Donnell is very impressed with himself, just ask him.

But he's only drawing slightly better than Phil Donahue did, and he was only getting 100,000 total, not even prime demographics. Reruns of the PowerPuff Girls on the Cartoon network were beating him for ratings ... and that's all the advertisers that pay the bills look at.

Last time I bothered to dig out my ratings books O'Donnell was around 120,000 total audience. As soon as they can find another host they probably will.
