Weapons policy on state university campuses to be discussed this week [PA]

A proposed policy that would allow concealed firearms to be carried in certain places on the 14 state university campuses is expected to generate some discussion at this week’s Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education board meeting.

However, no vote on the policy’s adoption is planned when the board meets on Wednesday and Thursday, said State System board member Ron Henry, who chairs the board’s finance, administration and facilities committee.

The system’s lawyers are now reviewing the policy proposal (see below) recommended by a public safety and security task force that veers away from the complete weapons ban that had been in place on all 14 state university campuses, which include Shippensburg and Millersville, he said.

The proposed policy would allow weapons in “non-sensitive areas” of campuses such as sidewalks and areas outside of buildings. But it would ban them inside buildings and sporting events, and at entertainment, recreational or educational events. It would allow for some exceptions to the ban for law enforcement, ROTC exercises and a few other activities.

- only allowing weapons to holders of CCW permits (all buildings and all areas)
- no weapons allowed in the dorms nor the frat houses by any students (CCW or not)

This would eliminate most of the party people and restrict by age (21) those eligible to staff, faculty, and half the senior class. And the normal CCW public, of course.
