(Maryland) Frustrated Gun Store Clerks Ignore Mandated Background Checks

Some Maryland gun store owners are ignoring pleas from the State Police, opting to sell guns to customers rather than waiting for background checks.

Maryland state police are trying to process a veritable flood of background check requests, which has left would-be gun owners and gun distributors peeved about the wait. "We're doing all we can to address the backlog," said Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley. "We've just never seen anything like this in the history of our responsibility for licensing firearms. The numbers are just staggering."

Maryland police have tripled their staff to tackle the backlog of 26,547 background check requests.

Gun distributors are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Maryland law states that gun buyers should not have to wait more than seven days to receive a firearm, while Maryland police are requesting as much as 10 weeks to process the background checks.

A recently passed law that bans assault-style weapons in Maryland is the catalyst that has been driving the gun grab, proving once again that gun control is one of the best ways to sell firearms.

if there's a hold on a background check for whatever reason, if after 3 days there's no resolution, the firearm is released to the customer, no exceptions.

the NICS is already done, but the redundant and needlessly slow MSP one takes weeks even though they use the same data bases.

The waiting time will shorten when the stampeding sheep realize that the President's "private army" isn't coming to confiscate their guns any time soon. In the meantime, let the morons WAIT.

I'd recommend they dig out their old security "bankees" to help them deal with their irrational fears while their state check is processed.

Perhaps you're familiar with those words.

Perhaps you don't consider gun ownership a right.

And before you stomp too hard on Maryland about "the President's private army" and " irrational fears", which way did that state vote again?

In the interview, Mr. Cuomo did not offer specifics about the measures he might propose, but, while discussing assault weapons, he said: “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

(1) They have already run the federally-required NICS; and
(2) The dealers have waited the state-mandated seven (7) day maximum for a customer to receive a firearm.

It seems the state of Maryland has set up another hoop for gun-owners, then promptly tripped on it. If it enacts an evidently redundant law, yet can't administer it, that only de-legitimizes the whole notion of governance.

Has the Maryland "assault-style weapon ban" gone into effect?

why should it bother you. Once the state gets it's shit together, the law will work as intended. Right now it is broken and it is not the public's problem.
