SANTA MARIA, Calif. A Santa Maria police officer was shot and killed Saturday by a fellow officer who was trying to arrest him for suspected sexual misconduct with a minor, the Santa Maria Times reported.
The slain officer was on duty when police tried to take him into custody early Saturday, the Santa Maria Police Department said in a press release.

What could we have done to keep this criminal from getting his hands on a hand gun?

(75,480 posts)those involved were all police officers on duty, they were all armed. The officer who was killed was involved in a sexual situation with a minor and apparently was resisting arrest, while on duty, when he was shot. It's a sad outcome all around and I wonder if the problem just isn't with the militarization of our police force.

(23,765 posts)the chief of police in Tacoma shot his wife in grocery store parking lot, while their two little children sat in a car and watched.

(24,331 posts)Apparently he was confronted for arrest, and started a physical struggle, then pulled out his gun and started firing, without hitting anyone. The arresting officers fired back, killing him. A sad story, but the other cops didn't have much option once the weapon was pulled. You don't screw around with that.

(15,472 posts)If their a suspect in a Hanus investigation having a job in law inforcement , which is more dangerous than a gun ,my solution, FIRE whoever let him slip through the cracks.

I cannot tell if you just forgot the sarcasm tag or you are really confused about what happened.

(4,286 posts)I have it on good authority that cops don't do bad things while on duty. Apparently, there are magical powers in the badge, uniform and cruiser that make it impossible.
What's Latin for "public accountability?"

(8,747 posts)According to CBS affiliate KCOY, the officer shot was the subject of an international criminal investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct against a 17-year-old girl.
The officer killed was 29-year-old Albert Covarrubias Jr. Santa Maria police officer Matthew Kline fired the deadly shot Saturday morning.
Police say Kline was attempting to arrest Covarrubias on suspicion of illegal sex with a minor. Covarrubias resisted and fired his gun before Kline fatally shot him once in the chest at a DUI checkpoint where he had been on duty.

(33,982 posts)Police officers should not take firearms home with them. IIRC, that is how Canada handles it.
I would argue it's a terrible idea in the US given the propensity for predators to follow cops home, etc, but maybe they've never had that problem in canada, or not to the degree we do. In any case, that's how Canada handles it. Going home? Shower, change, lock up your weapon.
They don't seem to take their work home with them.
Edit: Grammar is correctly correctly

(9 posts)I think this incident goes a LONG way as an example of how lives can be saved by adopting such a policy.

(192 posts)Not even close.
In case you missed it from the article, the dead cop was on duty as was the arresting officer.
Hence, both would have been armed even with such a policy.

(9 posts)And if we were progressive enough in this country then neither "on duty" cop would have been armed and there would not have been this tragic loss of life.
