More Senate Democtrats come out in opposition of new assault weapons ban

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Freshman Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly is opposing a ban on assault weapons sought by President Barack Obama.

A Donnelly spokesman told The Associated Press Wednesday that the Indiana lawmaker will vote against the ban but has not decided whether he would support universal background checks.

The Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee did not endorse colleague Dianne Feinstein’s assault weapons ban at a packed Capitol Hill hearing on guns Wednesday in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shooting.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., called for “common sense reform,” that closes loopholes in current gun laws and enforces background checks. Buthe did not endorse Feinstein’s tougher ban. “I know gun store owners in Vermont,” Leahy said. “They follow the law and conduct background checks…why should we not try to plug the loopholes in the law that allow (criminals and the mentally ill) to buy guns without background checks?”

Glad to see more and more lawmakers come out and oppose Feinstein's rubbish.

they are more common sense Conservative - Eisenhower Republicans which make them pretty liberal by today's standards. My inlaws are out in the VT boonies, I'm up there quite a bit. Great state, but NH is my favorite.

to hand over control of the Senate to the Republicans just yet. Perhaps they did learn something from '94 at least where it pertains to their own job security.

Good- we won't waste time and resources on a feel good law

Bad- NRA will still remember this at midterm and I will get more of the Obama's coming for your guns propaganda

Ugly- DiFI's attention grabbing lather, rinse, repeat will take the wind out of the sails and choke down discussion on measures which could actually improve this situation and be backed by the majority both sides of the issue
