The residents were preparing to drive away from their home, and the husband was unlocking a gate at the end of the driveway.
The older man walked onto their driveway "acting irrationally," police said. The resident told him to leave, and the intruder made comments about getting into their car and began arguing with the resident. The woman was in the car. The intruder walked through the gate onto the property, as the resident kept ordering him to leave. The suspect eventually crossed the street.
The husband continued preparing to leave.
The 50-year-old man turned with a cane in his hand, and "began to unclothe as if to fight and aggressively came toward the resident again," the release said.

Who are you to judge? You weren't there. You don't know what was going on. The police did not arrest the husband so what exactly is the problem here. The older man was committing assault. The only clear crime was committed by the guy who was shot.

(1,448 posts)Speaking as someone who has experience with older people with dementia, you underestimate their capability. So through in the random factor of not knowing the guy or having experience with him...

(1,448 posts)and as dumb as me saying I can take any 50 yr old because I'm younger... or even if I were to attack a young woman that I would automatically come out on top.
No one is saying shoot old people on sight.

(10,164 posts)... who would beat you to a bloody pulp with a stick if you tried disarming them hand-to-hand. Passing this guy off as some feeble "old man" is self-serving twaddle.

(3,539 posts)Let's see I'm about 10 years past 50 though still in OK shape. I don't currently own a gun but have no problem with them.
Let's say I did own a gun.
A demented person with a cane is making threatening gestures.
My loved one is in the car.
I am holding a (hopeful optimum sized) 2X4.
Do I leave my loved one at risk while I go inside and get the gun?
Or do I use the tools at hand?
Can't never tell what you're going to do until you've been there. But theirs instinct and I have a guess.
Hint: You never want to be on the wrong end of a 2X4 with 190 pounds of pissed off behind it.

(1,448 posts)Do not underestimate older people... that's all I can tell you. I have a FiL with dementia. He has outbursts. Because I know him I can talk him down. I also have a 3 yr old. He has outbursts. He is physically a handful when he's pissed, irrational, and throwing a tantrum. I can only imagine what my FiL would be like if he ever got violent.
So if I were facing an unknown person with dimentia... I may not shoot him... but I sure as hell will not engage him physically one-on-one.

(3,539 posts)Underestimating older people may not be a good idea.
Forget that I currently do not own a gun, I think instinct would have driven my reaction. I would have tried the 2X4 first.
I am not giving into the argument that "more people are killed by hammers than by guns".
Still; somewhere between fear, rage and blood lust anything can be a lethal weapon.
It is not the weapon that kills. It is the person behind it.
Trust me on this one as it is from long ago and far away.
You can do great harm with a 2X4.

(236 posts)All it does it piss the other person off if they know how to fight and do it often. Some people get hit with baseball bats and it doesn't phase them. How strong and fit are you? How much stamina do you have? And how much experience in melee do you have? How far are you willing to go to win the fight? That means more than anything. Hand to hand is quick brutal and extremely dangerous, especially if you are dealing with a unknown assailant. I've watched multiple people over the years sent to the hospital with a quickness with serious injuries because they think they are tough and bit off WAY more than they could chew. And in all those fights, they were over in 30 seconds, with one guy bloody and unconscious on the ground with a ambulance on the way. The best defense is to avoid the situation(leave), and if you can't do that the second best defense is a ranged weapon.

She acts irrationally, too and uses her TBI as an "excuse" and...oh, by the way...she is -57- years old.
I don't have enough details to make an informed comment on the above OP.
I am just saying ...
