Even in higher-ed, still a long way to go.

You don't know me, as I've never posted here before, but I just wanted to share an anecdote from my day and equality issues.
I serve on a committee with my college district, which sponsors an annual retreat for students.
Its focus is on leadership and conflict resolution, and we specifically target a balance of international and domestic students.
Well, this year we have a transgender FTM applicant.
I was shocked and saddened by some of the committee's response.
IRONY: It is the policy of the college district that transgender individuals are protected from discrimination, yet, there were all kinds of "concerns".
I did my best, nearly losing my temper at one point.
Resolution? It's being referred to the legal department.
Argh! *sigh*
Believe me, I'll be all over it if the legal department sides with the bigots. I don't think they will, though. The anti-discrimination clause is written into their policies. They'd have to change the policy to exclude this individual.
I just expected better from my colleagues. Days like this are discouraging......
