a horrible story out of Westminster

http://www.salon.com/2013/02/28/foul_play_suspected_in_dogs_death_at_westminster/

NEW YORK (AP) — A dog owner says she thinks there’s a chance her prized pet was deliberately poisoned while competing at the Westminter Kennel Club show, causing it to die several days later.

Lynette Blue tells The Associated Press that her 3-year-old Samoyed named Cruz probably swallowed poison during the recent show.

But she said Thursday she’s not sure how it happened, and may never know.

The dog’s death was first reported by The New York Times.

Westminster issued a statement Thursday saying it wasn’t aware of any dogs ever being poisoned at its show. The 137th Westminster drew 2,721 entries earlier this month.

I can't imagine what could possibly make a person want to harm an animal, especially someone who supposedly loves and respects them.

I wonder if it was intentionally done or just some form of negligence, someone leaving something out by accident, a cleaning chemical or something?

Frightening! Reminds me to take a close look at the hotel room my dog and I will be staying in at our agility trial next weekend. Dogs sample with their mouths sometimes.

3. have to be something unusual for the dog to die days later without symptoms.

suppose these pampered poochies get full autopsies in cases like this.
could have been the dog that looked at this one's behind the whole show, or an owner who was sick of an also ran dog.
someone should write a book.

and I wasn't sure I wanted to even voice my thought. Since it was several days later, if that dog was poisoned, it was not at the show. I hate to think that someone would do this to their own dog just because it didn't win, but I have heard worse.

Call me suspicious until I have more information.

The dog could have easily licked up rat poison. Dumpsters routinely have "rat boxes" behind or underneath them. They contain a poison that cause the animal to bleed internally and death can come slowly. It is usually mixed with a sticky substance that sticks to rodents feet and they track it all over the ground on their way back to their nest. The reason a slow acting poison is used is that the rat takes the poison home and kills the entire nest.
This is all horrible and the reason I am explaining the entire thing is to warn people walking their dogs around dumpster areas. It may not be what happened to this dog but the ground around these boxes are poisonous.
