Here's my choweiler...
It's been three weeks since we lost the diva lab who apparently ruled the place. The big guy is still crying at night when he's left alone (and he refuses to come upstairs!) and he's been following me around me than he ever did. Most routines are the same yet he never has to rush out the door in the morning like they both used to and he has stopped looking for someone to play bite and run around with just before we go out for a walk.
The house is much quieter. No yipping when I am on the phone, no jingling down the hall or sneaking in the guest bathroom. When I come home from anywhere, everything looks the same. The whip-like tail of our black beauty lab left a clear trail of where she had been during the day. I wish I had used a hidden camera just to see what they were up to!
He has started following me around the kitchen which was never his thing. I kinda like having him there!
We're okay. I still ache from time to time and I still feel bad for my big moose bear. But he has the spotlight now and we're all lavishing him with attention.
Thanks for letting me share.

(12,296 posts)I know exactly what you're dealing with. It's a very odd adjustment time & you miss things you never "noticed" before, and notice new things about your remaining pack members.
I've lost 2 so far, and the 2nd was as painful as the 1st.

(135,425 posts)I think they like having a companion. I know mine prefer a companion, even when they are competing for the best spot or the first treat.
Maybe you could do a little fostering if you're not ready to commit; and if a dog comes along that gets on well with your pooch, you can grab 'em and keep 'em.

the big guy was pretty beat down until I adopted my Corey in 2005. He became a young dog again for a couple of years.

I miss all of them with every cell of my heart. Maybe another dog will help heal the hole in his heart?
