Euthanasia for my beloved beagle Petey

Monday after our Petey was deathly sick all night our vet told us that he has a large tumor on his liver. They gave us two antiemetics and an antibiotic. So he's not vomiting anymore and after a day or so he seemed to return to normal. He's 13 years old.

The vet says we don't have to put him down now, but I know we will soon. Here's my worry. Our Jack died in 2015 from Lymphoma. He took a turn for the worse on a Friday night. Our vet back then had Saturday hours but we had a very long 12 hours between when his illness became painful and the vet's office opened.

For when Petey's time is up, is it reasonable of me to ask the vet for a serious pain killer to tide Petey over until we can get him to the vet when they open? I can't stand the thought of him suffering all night like our Jack did.

Hoping some DU pet lovers can offer some advice.

1. There are some vets that provide the service

in your home. See if your vet can refer you to someone who does that.

3. I haven't asked my vet yet

but I have looked into at home euthanasia. Because of where we are it would be prohibitively expensive. We are pretty remote. But you're right, I should ask the vet.

That way you will feel you did the absolute best for your beloved pet. I have been thru it 3x and it is SO HARD. Take care of yourself thru this. And give little Petey a pat for me.

for some reason I needed permission I don't know what is wrong with me I am usually so decisive.

4. I believe in giving them a peaceful exit in my arms

before they are in constant pain. I’d rather being in my arms and feeling comfort and loved as the best way to send them to their forever sleep. Pain tends to erase those good feelings.

I lost my Sugar suddenly when a tumor on his liver ruptured one morning. He couldn't stand nor walk and yelped when I lifted him into the car to rush to the vet's. I had to let him go. He was almost 16, a cancer survivor, and an amputee. From the first sign something was wrong until we released him from pain was less than two hours.

I can't decide which would be worse. Losing a loved pet suddenly like you did, or watching as they fade away.

13. Okay I have emailed the doctor

They are a very busy practice and they can take their time replying. This way I don't have to keep them on the phone on a busy day.

I hope he says yes otherwise we may end up putting him down way before he gets to be in pain.

I will be okay with it as long as he doesn’t suffer. If I can get that worry soothed I can deal with losing him.

Right now after his awful night on Sunday he’s back to his old self. Sharing frozen mango chunks with me, coming up for a hug, asking for a piece of my dinner.

The way he is right now it would be hard to put him down. On the other hand I don’t want to leave it until he’s in pain.

Just a tough decision.

19. I'm glad he feels better today

We just went through this with my sisters 16yo beagle. Not knowing when you should do it is tough. Mine have always been emergencies but I definitely can sympathize.

Just hold him at the end and you will have loved him the best you can

Was an emergency but the vet didn’t open for 12 hours. That was awful. I feel like I have a little more peace of mind now.

I can see that his breathing is different. He's alert and his appetite is great. But I see little signs even with medication that he's fading.
