Related: About this forumMy dogs (Cindy and Murphy) got into a porcupine carcass this morning
They are not puppies. Cindy turned 10 years old last month and Murphy will be 10 years old on Sunday. We were on our morning walk down a rural road and they were off leash as usual. One of the locals was driving by and stopped to talk and the dogs got bored (I guess) and went into the woods within eyesight. I was talking and didn't notice what they were doing and then I saw them both chewing. I called them and they came right away, chewing the whole time.
Cindy had a quill stuck in her nose! That's how I figured out what they got into (I wasn't going to go check).
Anyway, I looked inside their mouth, on the roof of their mouth and all around their muzzles and did not see any quills.
Yuk. I hope they didn't swallow any .
They have eaten some really dumb things in the past ten years. Add this to the list.

(17,528 posts)This happened a couple months before I adopted her. One went in the corner of her eye and got the tear duct. Her eye was still tearing when I got her. They didn't expect her to stop tearing... but she fooled them and they're perfect. She got another one in the roof of her mouth, her tongue and lower edge of the other eye plus others around her face. Must have been quite a fight. Glad I wasn't there.

(22,145 posts)When we moved here (PA) in 2007, Cindy tangled with a baby porcupine. She had about 50 tiny quills in her back leg and quills in her mouth, between her teeth, and all around her muzzle. They were small and we used tweezers. It took us six hours to pull them all out. She was such a good girl. We had just moved in one week before this happened.
I'm glad your dog recovered with no issues. Since moving here, the neighbors have told us some horrible stories about porcupines and dogs .
