A very odd feline behavior.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I come humbly, hat in hand (figuratively, of course), looking for wisdom and some insight into a very odd behavior of one of my cats.

Sadie is 5-1/2, a tuxedo female, very sweet and vocal and loving, and Queen of her realm. She's the oldest of my 4 cats (2 females and 2 males, all spayed/neutered), who all get along quite well and have their own very interesting interpersonal dynamics.

Anyway, Sadie does this thing that just baffles me, and has done it all of her adult life. In our old house, every evening she would sit in a corner of the closet (which I had to leave open for her, if I knew what was good for me) and have a conversation with herself. She'd meow and mew and make other vocalizations, and this would go on for a good 5-10 minutes. When she was done, she'd come out of the closet and just be her normal self.

If I interrupted her to see if she was okay, she'd silently glare at me until I left her alone, then resume her little ritual. If I left her alone, she'd sometimes come and jump on my lap when finished and want some attention.

We moved to a new place about 6 weeks ago and I didn't really notice that she'd stopped doing it -- but now that we're settled in, she's chosen a new corner in which to resume this practice every evening. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen a cat do (and I've seen mine do some weird things) and I have no clue what it's all about.

She had a checkup just before we moved and is in excellent health. She doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain, and is active and playful and normal (relatively speaking, for a cat) the rest of the time.

Any insights?

...only instead of sitting still in a corner, he chatters while running helter skelter all over the apartment. Our other cats may or may not be involved in this thing of his, but even now that he's getting old we can count on hearing his approaching and receding footfalls and chatter a minimum of 3-4 days per week.

It sounds like your Sadie is just more 'Zen' than our Shakey.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]What a riot! I've heard that orange tabbies have a delightful crazy streak.

My younger two are roughly 22 months (black tabby, female) and 14 months (gray, male), and they do all of the helter-skeltering around here on a regular basis.

Queen Sadie looks on from her chosen throne of the moment and Sir Buster, our Minister of Defense, does his best to ignore them.

There could well be a touch of zen involved in Sadie's nightly habit.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Anything's Possible™ (the actual name of my religion), but I'd be really surprised. Sadie, despite her name, has never had exposure to Jewish religious culture.

That I know of. Then again, when she goes out without telling me where she's going....

Now that you mention it, there's a lot about this feline's life I don't know -- up to 6 whole hours in every 24 that she's not sleeping. Would she continue to live with a goy?

Using the closet as her 'confessional'

Kidding, of course. But maybe she just needs that private 'me' time. Then after, refreshed, she comes to you for some cuddling. Doesn't sound like a bad ritual to me, if it makes her happy.

I wouldn't worry. Sounds like Sadie has got *it* all together. 'Zen', like someone upthread said.

Amazing, how unique the personalities of our pets. Oh, and thanks for the pics! She looks like a sweetie.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]For that reason only, I doubt she's going to confession every night as she certainly doesn't need to.

I've just been trying to understand Sadie's little ritual because it's so unusual and I've never had a cat (out of many over several decades) that did this before.

You're absolutely right about how amazing and unique our pets are-- and an endless source of fascination (and entertainment).

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]She could just like the acoustics.

I'll pay more attention to the vocalizations she makes and see if there's any kind of pattern.

Of course, she also could just be a little meshuggeneh or zen. Gotta say, her behavior fascinates me.
