Related: About this forumThat last trip to the vet
I took our senior cat to her doctor yesterday for what is euphemistically known as putting down. She was over 20 and was clearly in the process of dying of old age. But still, there is always that moment after the sedative goes in, but before the lethal dose, when I want to change my mind and try just one more thing to keep the cat going.

(27,820 posts)Took my beloved Siamese, Alicka, to the vet - wound up having to leave him there for a week for tests and treatment.
I returned a week later, thinking I would be bringing him home. That's when the vet told me his treatment hadn't worked. He explained that Alicka was in kidney failure, and if I took him home, he had less than a five percent chance of living more than another two weeks.
The vet asked if I wanted to have him euthanized, and I said yes. He then asked me if I wanted to see Alicka one last time - and I said no. I knew if I saw him, I would take him home - having convinced myself on the spot that this diagnosis was all wrong, or that some miracle cure would be found in the next twenty-four hours.
I am so sorry for how you must be feeling right now. But you did the right thing by your pet, and that's what really matters. You can't hold her in your arms anymore - but you can hold her in your heart forever.
The above happened over forty years ago - but Alicka is still in my heart, even as we speak.

(998 posts)The furry critters who live with us are family and it hurts when they have to leave. Hate those last vet visits.

(209 posts)So sorry. That eventual day is rarely included with the kitten or adoptee training.
