Back around 1995 I house sat for several weeks for a friend. The house was in a neighborhood of similar homes, nice but older places with mostly middle aged to older folks.
The weather was warm so after dinner Id sit on the front porch relaxing for an hour or so. One evening this cat appeared, meowed a hello. I got a small piece of left over pot roast for the cat. She appeared the following night and I got her another bite of my leftovers from dinner.
The following day I had to go grocery shopping, so I thought Id get some cat food for this stray, which she enjoyed. This went on for about two weeks, her visiting me and me feeding her.
One afternoon when I was in the backyard I met the lady who lived next door. As we talked over the fence, she mentioned she was becoming concerned about her indoor/outdoor cat as the cat had been putting on weight. I then realized my little stray was actually my neighbors pet. I stopped feeding the cat, and she stopped visiting me; so it wasnt my sparkling personality that kept her coming back.

We lived in a trailer court, and our neighbor told us about this kitten that had been unceremoniously dumped by a psycho when he was no longer a cute little kitten. He was surviving by begging at all the trailers in our little court. So I took him in, gave him food and water and a warm bed, groomed him, got him fixed, and carried him around to all the trailers to tell everyone that I would now be feeding him so they didn't have to. And they stopped, pretty much. So several months went by. The vet said that he seemed to be getting too fat, and maybe I should feed him less. So I was careful to give him only what the vet said I should. He kept getting fatter and fatter, yet I knew I was not overfeeding him. It was a puzzle. Then, one day, on my way home, I spotted him in a nearby trailer court, across a creek and through a small woods. I went to get him, and a woman on her porch said, "Oh, so that's your cat? He's been coming to all our trailers for food for a couple of months. We thought he must have been dumped here."
