Nothing quite like the 2:00 am mouse chase

We learned on Saturday that we have a mouse in the house. The kids saw Happy chasing it in and out of our bedroom.

Either Happy didn't get it on Saturday (we didn't find a dead one anywhere), or there's another one, because last night he was on the chase again. The hunt kept us awake for about 45 minutes.

I will reiterate our household situation. We have 4 pure-bred American Rat Terriers and a cat.

There is some evidence that Happy is taking his job seriously.

It's time to fire the dogs.

1. I once had a cat who brought a mouse to my bed in the middle of the night.

Problem was, the mouse was still alive when she dropped it at my feet. The mouse ran the full length of my body and jumped off my shoulder with the cat hot on its heels.

I think she brought me gifts like that in the hopes that I would learn to hunt for myself.

We used mouse traps to try to get any mice that got inside. One of the traps caught a mouse and the cat was trying to bring me the mouse (and the trap). The bedroom door was ajar but now wide enough for the cat to come inside with the mouse and trap so it kept hitting the door.

He was very proud to put it next to me in bed. Fred was 18 and we figured a pre-caught mouse was just the thing for a retired cat.

The weather gets cold and the meeses come a running. Saw my first about two weeks ago. Haven't seen or heard from him since though.

We always get some in the fall, they are trying to setup inside for the winter. Our cat is doing a pretty good job keeping them at bay.

If your cat caught the mouse on Saturday he might have eaten it and there would be no dead mouse to dispose of.

I had a cat that moved in last year and he is a serious mouser (and will also go after rats which seem to live in our neighborhood). The rats are a new thing and didn't even know they were in the area until one of my neighbors listed off all the wildlife around us. I live in an old house there are usually ways for mice (and rats) to come inside if they want to.

I actually watched Casey eat a mouse one day. He has caught 3 rats and I managed to dispose of all of them. I did have a tug of war fight with the cat to get him to let go of one of them though.

I went downstairs the day after Thanksgiving to watch the Iowa-Nebraska game, and found a dead mouse on the floor. First mouse in the house in the 16 years we've lived here. Fortunately, my wife didn't see it, so I didn't have to peel her off the ceiling.
