Bad luck with pets.

I had a lovely little dog (a mix of Beagle and Sheltie). She developed a tumor on her paw and had surgery to remove it ($$$$).
It was too late. The cancer had spread to her abdomen and we lost her a couple of months later. She was only 6.

Some months later we adopted a rescue puppy (looks like a long-legged Dachshund). A wild and crazy puppy who would eat anything and everything --- including a chunk of a toy that got stuck in her intestine. Another emergency surgery ($$$$). Now she is almost 2 and has calmed down somewhat. But has no toys of the edible kind.

My other dog (a Rat Terrier mix) is a sweet boy who was just diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. It took a long time for the vet to figure out why he was drinking gallons of water. After many tests ($$$) and meds ($$$), I'm hoping he'll do OK -- if we can figure out the correct medicine dosage.

I wouldn't give them up -- even with the problems we have had.

other dogs under 6 months. She told me that one of the questions they asked her on a written application was how much she would be willing to spend on a dog if it needed medical treatment for anything. She was not happy with that but I think it is a good idea to a degree. I know some people can't afford much but have a ton of love and a warm home to give while others will abandon a dog off at a shelter if it needs only about $50 of medical treatment. I would spend as much on my babies as I would on a human child....in fact I have. I would rather not see a movie or eat out or get a new outfit if I had the choice of spending that money on health needs (hers or mine).

You are a good parent! Your babies have had good luck with you.

* I did get pet health insurance after my dog was sick as a puppy but it was expensive. I finally stopped it after she had been healthy for about 10 years and I ended up spending it on my ACA bills.

One was elderly, one had a congenital heart defect, our beloved Freddie had FIP. Then we took in our grandcat and he died suddenly. Spent $$$$ at the vet on Freddie. After all that, told DH a house is empty without a cat or two, and we adopted our boys. They have both been healthy for the past 3.5 years, thankfully.
