and until late this morning i never thought about it. after all they are mammals as we are, so if we can get it, they can too. majik, 11yrs old, only male in the house yollowed/ talked loudly to me yesterday afternoon, i thought he was looking for me, so we 'chatted', he's done this before. he wouldn't eat dinner....well, that's unusual, but big hairball. maybe it's his, watchful waiting. this am, he refused breakfast and looked me in the eyes and yollowed again, off to the vet. the stone shows up nicely in his left kidney, maybe about 1-2 millimeters, it must hurt like a beyotch. blood work is fine, so no liver probs from missing 2 meals, no kidney issues, but urinalysis will be back tomorrow. he's back home, in his favorite spot, pain meds on board, some food and water in him. later this pm, i'll go get some clam juice to keep tempting him to keep hydrated. for humans, they would be more aggressive. for oldish cats, no surgery, pain meds, maybe new foods....off to research...

(33,036 posts)just recalled his mother, mojo, had a big bladder stone removed about 9 years ago, ....special food, which is good that i've found him eating hers' in the past. if he hadn't complained of pain and refused food, i would have never known....paw prints on the heart...

(33,036 posts)omg smelly, but i watched him totter, stoned to drink the clam juice then water then hide back under the matress. i'm gonna check out those bubbling fountains to see if they will help with fluid intake. i plan on using clam juice as bait to get him for his next pain med squirt . i've locked the other 3 cats and the dog out of the back bedroom. there have been several pitiful meows and one hopeful woof they wanna share.

Kitty hugs to Majik.

(2,825 posts)He would lift his leg to pee and nothing would come out. The stones were really interfering with the process. They chose surgery for the quick fix. He is doing great.
Like you, I hadn't thought about kidney stones in other mammals.

(33,036 posts)he's still isolated from the other 3. the litter pan is dry, the radiograph yesterday showed an empty stomach and bladder, so the minimal food/fluid i've seen him take in may not have processe yet. and pain meds will slow colonic activity down in humans, so i'll think that in cats too. i have class today until 4:30, but unless something changes, we'll be back for some more vettime...so sent vibes that majik will decide to whizz in the pan (and not some place hidden in my back bedroom)

(33,036 posts)after 24 hours, no urine output in kittypan, so back to vet. ms wonderful, my partner, took him.( i had a totally mandatory class today) Majik, was not happy and spoke/complained , loudly, the whole way there. then as the vet was doing an external abdominal/ bladder exam, he decided it was time to urinate, apparently alot. he soaked her and the techs scrub shirt. another radiograph will be done to see if the stone has moved, and he will get more pain meds. poor cat, poor ms wonderful, poor vet staff, and i missed it...

(33,036 posts)he's still getting the pain meds, and the tuna/clam juice, but he is using the litter pan...i felt awful pushing him out from under the bed, then squirting meds into his mouth, then an hour later taking a stoned kitty and pushing/pulling on his abdomen. he still loves eileen tho....which is good. this was stressful for me. i hated thinking about putting him to sleep, but for today, he's still peeing on his own....yip-PEE
