It was unexpected he was perfectly normal and then gone. I am beyond broken hearted. He was so much better than any human. I dont know how to post photos. I was not prepared for this, devastated.

(17,441 posts)I've had to put down two sick dogs to date, and I took it harder than I did when some family members have passed.
It is very normal to feel this devastation when your pet dies. I had a long talk with the vet about this because I was trying to get my head around why this hurts so badly. She said that there are 2 reasons:
1) Our pets depend totally on us.
2) We are everything to them, and they give their entire selves to us without expecting anything back from us...that's just how they are wired.
Don't be afraid to let your feelings show...it's a terrible terrible loss, and you need to grieve properly. Most people will understand this. Keep reminding yourself that you did good by your pet...you did good.

(4,033 posts)All I can say is I understand how you feel. They are never with us long enough and when they leave they take a piece of our heart with them. All I can tell you is that after some time has passed you will discover that they also leave a piece of their heart with you.
So sorry for you loss.

(2,191 posts)Of course you're devastated. He took a piece of your heart, but one day you'll find it easier to remember that he also left a piece of his heart with you.
I'm sorry for your loss. Giving my fur baby extra kisses tonight in honor of yours.

(6,082 posts)I had a cat once who was fine one minute and dead on my bed when I turned around. I am so very sorry. They live such short lives compared to ours.

(81,300 posts)We lost one of ours this past summer. We knew it was coming. She was disabled from a stroke and we knew she only had a little while left. Beautiful classic tabby. Almost 20 human years old. Sweet thing.
Dammit. We love them and dread the day they inevitably leave. But how could we NOT have these precious companions in our lives?
Thank you for bringing your grief here. You wont have to go through it alone. Lots of us have been through this and shared it here, and found sympathy, empathy, and comfort. This is a truly great community. As DUer Skittles once put it: someones always here. Sure meant a lot to me that day.

(28,125 posts)You've lost a child. That's why it's so devastating. I feel I'm a mother of three: a human son and two crazy sweet dogs.
Sending hugs.

(14,492 posts)That's how I survived my mom's passing.
With my pets that are now gone, it always hurt me that they couldn't talk to me and tell me what was hurting them or why they just were not themselves. I suppose them being quiet companions that never complain (unlike so many humans) is why we love them so much.

(205,467 posts)Though I've been there, as well, and we never are really prepared for it, no matter what. But I do know that it does help to talk about it - so you did the right thing, brought it to people you knew would understand and be there for you when you needed love and support. The one reassurance I can offer you which I hope might help when more time has passed - and that he was so very fortunate to have found you. Hang in there and please let us know how you are.
And here are instructions for posting photos here, whenever you want them.

I am so very sorry for your unexpected loss. People who are not owned by the furries do not understand what we go through when we lose them.

(160,542 posts)You will never stop missing him, but you will feel glad that he was with you for the time you had together. They are completely irreplaceable. Remind yourself you don't know everything you are going to learn, and there may be a better explanation behind your experience than it seems right now, as you travel through this part of your life.
Gotta have hope that in time it will look totally different to us all.
There's got to be a reason we love them so much, and that love maybe isn't lost, after all. That's what I try to remind myself.
You are not alone. People are thinking about you.
Take good care of yourself.

I come from a very large family, but I don't see my parents every day, I don't see my brothers and sisters every day, and I don't see my son every day.
I do see my fur-babies every day. They are such a HUGE part of my every day existence.
When you say "devastated without you," I completely get it.
My heart is breaking for you.
