Related: About this forumAdult dog urinates in the house.
He is 6 and definitely knows to go outside to pee. He stays in the same room as me (I work at home) --- and he'll go to the door and scratch.
But if he has a full bladder at night, he'll pee on any handy rug. And it has ruined sections of the hardwood floors.
This is a fairly recent phenomenon in the past year and I'm at wit's end trying to figure out why he does this.
I've cut down on his water to a bare minimum starting around 6pm hoping that this would work.
My only option is to crate him at night (he has never been crated).
Help!!!

(18,770 posts)Unfortunately it wasn't good news. Even though he's never been sick a day in his life, he had developed type 1 diabetes.
I would consult a vet asap. ☹️

(5,919 posts)I'd have a Vet check him out first before any home solutions like crating him.

(14,559 posts)Dogs this young seldom exhibit weak bladders but does happen. If your vet doesn't find anything medically wrong you might try a bladder control suppliment.
My 14 yo Schnauser developed this issue, exactly as you describe, and after trying everything you have I found NaturVet Bladder Support on Amazon. After a day or so the problem resolved itself. And the dog loved them!
Do check with your vet first tho, your dog is too young for this to be a first diagnosis.

(10,849 posts)He was going to ruin the hardwood floor. I trained him to go to the linoleum floored bathroom where I have many pp pads. It is messy but my hardwood is safe.

(4,033 posts)As has been mentioned above could be UTI, weak bladder, diabetes, or a few other things. If there is one of these they are all treatable.

(2,769 posts)I will definitely take him to our vet.
Just an hour ago, I went into the kitchen to make myself some lunch. When I came back to my office, there was a new puddle on one of the scatter rugs.
I knew he was the culprit, because my other dog had followed me to the kitchen.
It's raining outside and he is not fond of going out in the rain.

(8,387 posts)Get a urine sample if you can before going to the vet. This happened to our daughter and son-in-law's dog and he had a very bad urinary tract infection.
Good luck and please let us know how he is. Also, invest in a male wrap for him.

(11,924 posts)put her on something called Proin. He tried to explain it to me so gingerly, about just like older female humans have bladder and incontinence problems, etc. He prescribed 2x/day, but I found 1x/day works fine. Until she needs 2x/day he told me to stick with what I was doing. We do still put down pee pads just in case and to try to save what carpet we have left.
Maybe male dogs go through something similar. She was 7yo when she started having issues. The leaking and piddling have stopped. Now all we have to do is make sure she gets one last potty call between 11:00 and midnight. Then she's good until 7-8 a.m.
Best of luck with the vet and finding the solution. I can totally feel for you and am sending positive thoughts for you and your pupper.

(2,769 posts)... that I make him (and the other dog) go out at night around 10:30 or 11 to do their business.
