Best animal charities?

Hubs and I are making a will and one of the things I'm insisting on is that some money go to an animal charity. Need recommendation.

Charity Watch has these listed as best:

1. The Bat Bridges in Austin& Houston are worth a look. The bats eat the 'skeeters

Millions of 'skeeters after hurricane. Skeeters spread heartworm disease in our domestic animals.

I do not know their charity grades.

Unfortunately, the way my hub's fund is set up, we can name but one more charity and we're trying to find one that covers the most issues.

(If left up to just me, I'd cancel the donation to his University. shhh)

4. I have always wished I had enough money to donate.

My wish would to be to donate money to a service animal group. There are people who have unseen physical disabilities who can not get help acquiring a service dog. I am one of those people and I could never find any organization who helped those like me. It is both for animals and people at the same time because most service animals that are not guide dogs come from shelters and it helps those who really need them to get them and get help to professionally train them. I have worked for shelters for some years and they need a lot of help. I am positive that at some point any type of government ( federal, state, county, and city ) are going to cut funding for shelters. I am not looking forward to strays out on the streets getting killed and abused so that is another place I would donate to. That is just my thought. I am also referring to non-kill shelters which I did not have the pleasure of working for as I worked for the county animal shelter.

I believe the one I support also helps the Guide Dog group in NJ.

Wish I could name at least 10 charities but unfortunately I cannot. I'll ck to see if the PetSmart Charities include animal service groups since that supportsp so many causes.

6. For the kitties: Big Cat Rescue and Tiny Kittens

These folks do an amazing job publicizing the down side of exotic pets and roadside zoos, as well as caring for many wonderful critters.

And at the other end, these folks do wonderful work with feral colonies and trap/spay/neuter programs, publicizing the importance of spay/neuter, and adoption over breeder purchase- especially ferals!

PetSmart Charities do include helping kitties.

I keep donating to international charities, much to my hub's dismay...he says I donate too much. But I'm most frugal otherwise - bare minimum clothes shopping, no hairdressers for the last 31yrs, no concerts, etc. I'm no martyr but I put animal charities as a priority. It's most unfortunate that I'm now limited to choosing but one.

13. We like to keep it local

we support a rescue group that takes in animals no one else wants because they are old, the wrong breed, have disabilities or special needs. We adopted 2 and are working on becoming foster parents. I don't need to guess what my money is used on, I follow them on FB and see exactly where it goes. We donated a few weeks ago and I am certain part of that money went to a dog that needed $750 surgery this weekend. He was left behind when his owners moved, they locked him in the house and he had to chew his way out to survive.

Due to the way the fund is set up, I can chose but one more charity. Our local shelter is not doing badly now but we'll be moving to an area that does need help. Will suggest this to Mr. Duppers.

14. Nowzad

Helps the dogs, cats, donkeys, and horses in Kabul, Afghanistan. Started when a British soldier wanted to adopt a stray dog he named Nowzad and bonded with on tour in Afghanistan. Recently, an American soldier found a litter of puppies and Nowzad was able to bring the puppies to Texas where the soldier lives. He has found home for all the puppies.

The Morris Animal Refuge in Phila and to the Humane Society in San Diego. I was a foster parent to Morris while in college in Phila and I got my first little girl from the SD Humane Society so I know both groups. I don't have kids so my dogs are my kids.

31. Phila has a lot of "firsts"s.

Ben Franklin did a lot of it. History is everywhere you look in Center City area where I lived.

For a few years my family lived in a 150+ year old brick row house and it was across the street from The Morris. After they moved to CA My sister and I lived in two different houses withing a block so I was still close to the refuge and volunteered as a foster parent while living in Phila my last year there. The house I rented had hardwood floors and that was perfect for animals that weren't housebroken. It was the best time of my life...very young kittens and puppies as well as adult dogs. My roommates loved them too.

My son spent time in Pilly with a close friend, even inherited his two cats from her. ( She had to move back in with parents post JHU graduation and they forbade the furballs.)

The most giving folks in the world are animals lovers like yourself.

21. Beagle Freedom Project

Has now changed their name to Rescue+Freedom Project. Started out trying to rescue beagles from research facilities (95% of dogs used in research are beagles due to their loving nature and forgiving personalities) and has expanded to include other animals as well. Many have never seen the outside of a crate and have been "de-barked" and otherwise mutilated.
If you ever need to shed some happy tears, watch their videos of rescued dogs experiencing their first time to walk on grass or see sunshine. Haven't seen any ratings for them, but they seem sincere and I was hooked after the first video I watched. (Didn't hurt that I was watching it with my beagle-mix who rescued me.)

22. RAM-USA helps both humans and animals. Remote Area

Medical provides high impact clinics for humans (medical, dental, vision) as well as animals (spay/neuter and other vet services). This is an awesome organization and they have clinics all over the US. https://www.ramusa.org/

34. Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon

It's a spay/neuter program for cats. No-cost for stray,feral and barn cats. Low-cost for pet cats. They have spayed and neutered 97,000 cats since 1995 and are working toward a 100,000 goal. www.feralcats.com if you would like to read about this fantastic organization!
