Wouldn't the noise have kept the pooch at a distance if he had just fired the gun into the ground? meti57b Apr 2012 #9

Nothing will bring back that pooch and nothing will compensate for his loss, but the police just brushing it off just makes it worse.

A huge segment of the population has cats and pooches for "best friends". I hope we can do something in response to this.

I feel that this is one of many stories that add up to a huge indictment of law enforcement in this country. They are more like an occupying military force than a local police department. Shoot first and ask questions later. Our country has gone off the rails. They aren't using the military against our citizens. The government went around that and turned the cops into soldiers. They have no regard for our civil liberties or our rights to be secure in our own homes. This would be a one off story or would never have happened if we hadn't slowly built up to this over the last several decades. I have three large dogs and I used to have a dog named Cisco too. He fared much better than this poor dog. This makes me wonder if all those 'stand your ground' laws apply when the cops show up at your house uninvited and they shoot your dog. Can you fight back? Should I be packing when I play with my dog in the back yard now? I've had my home ransacked by law enforcement before. I personally feel that they are a far bigger threat to my safety than any thugs in my area. OK...I'm off on a rant.

Don't get me wrong. I don't advocate violence, and escalating things doesn't help either. Forget the packing thing. I don't even have firearms in my home anymore. The cops wanted to seize them last time they were here so I gave them to a good friend for safe keeping. All I want is to feel safe in my home, and feel like the police are here to serve and protect rather than search and destroy. Let cooler heads prevail.

The police in our country have become a standing army, and they are armed to the hilt. There is no way cops need to be yielding full auto machine guns in the streets of this nation. Urban assault vehicles, helicopters, military training and tactics...WTH. I know it was a dog but how many innocent people are shot dead by cops every year? Sorry about the rant but I am sick of it. I am more afraid of being pulled over by a cop than I am of being confronted by a criminal.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Chief Art Acevedo expressed sympathy about a highly talked-about case involving an Austin police officer who shot and killed a man’s dog while responding to the incorrect address.

Speaking with Cisco’s owner Michael Paxton on KLBJ-FM’s “Dudley and Bob Morning Show,” Acevedo apologized about the incident and also commented on police procedure.

“Believe it or not, we are animal lovers just like any one else,” said Acevedo. “I want to say I am sorry on behalf of all the members of the department.

“Last night, I saw you on TV and my heart went out to you,” he added. “It is bumming me out. I am a pet person and most of us are."

The “Justice for Cisco” Facebook page had received more than 40,225 “likes” as of noon Tuesday.
