Related: About this forumOur new fur baby....
Our family lost a fur baby this year and weve been feeling the loss for weeks. We recently were walking through our local pet store picking up a few things for our shi-tzu when I felt a nose nuzzle me on my side. That was the moment we were introduced to the soulfulness of the greyhound. We made a decision to adopt a racing greyhound and our journey of adoption came to fruition on Saturday. At the end of our home visit, Id love to tell you that we chose our baby, but, in fact he chose us. Our baby boy, Dylan, has been an amazing addition to our family. Hes still getting used to his knew home, but hes already bonding to his fam. I couldnt help but share a pic of this amazing animal with you guys!

(32,975 posts)Angel Peanut of blessed memory, was part greyhound. Some things I am compled to share....Needle Nose pokes are a true thing.....Coat for outside, sweater for the house(depending on weather) get used to sharing the afghan and pillows on the couch. And snoring can be a real thing, loudly.
Docreed2003
(16,860 posts)We already bought him a lambs wool coat that he wears when he goes out...and when we get in bed, and hes done this since the first night he was here, he paws at his fleece PJs until we put them on him. Its like having another child in the house. His facial expressions are amazing!
He doesnt snore, but his new favorite thing early in the morning is to use his nose to check in on me in the bathroom...just cause were the only ones that are up and he looks at me like Whew...I was scared you were gone forever!

(130,915 posts)I saw one today, being walked along with a friend, similar size but NOT greyhound, and I almost jumped out of the car to say HI, but I restrained myself.
Have fun, and hugs to Dylan and you all!

(16,860 posts)Hes a gorgeous dog and looks like he walked off and Egyptian hieroglyph! It also helps that hes totally sweet and so emotional! Hugs to you and yours too!

With that face, he could probably get away with anything (with me).

(16,860 posts)Our boy is so sweet and so soulful. The adoption process was quite involved and we met many greyhounds and they all seem similarly sweet.

(34,109 posts)I followed a page of one of them in England when I was on Facebook. He was older and passed then she got another. I miss knowing how they are doing, it was so fun to follow along with a FB page written in British Greyhound speak.
Those eyes are killer! Beautiful.

(7,809 posts)I used to live near a retired gentleman who adopted a rescued greyhound named Ellie (yes, I remember her name, but not his). The first time I saw them walk by, I petted her and she leaned up against my leg while I stroked her head and back.
This beautiful and gentle dog had the most amazing coat. The best way to describe it is calico or tortoise shell cat. She and her daddy were quite happy together.

(16,860 posts)Tonight I was talking about my day with my wife...a day which was kinda crap and stressful, and as Im talking I feel this warm lean against my leg out of nowhere. Dylan hasnt left my side since then...its weird but he seems so emotionally in tuned to everyone in the house.

(776 posts)I used to have a giant white greyhound with Brindle spots. His name was Pasha. What a wonderful dog. Miss him. Greyhounds aren't expressive in the same way a Lab is. They are much subtler. I've had both. Love them all.
Docreed2003
(16,860 posts)Ive had labs in the past and youre exactly right. Dylan seems to be much more subtle in his emotional responses and my analogy that I tell my wife, which is ridiculous but funny, is that Dylan is more of a cat than a dog!

Docreed2003
(16,860 posts)And its GLORIOUS when he runs...he usually goes out to potty and then makes at least one or two good runs. After hes done, he runs right up to the door and is like ok, Im through with that...can I nap?

(108,978 posts)Was an adoption event occurring that day that you didn't know about? How did Dylan happen to be there?
Docreed2003
(16,860 posts)That was probably six weeks ago. We went through an extensive application and vetting process prior to even meeting our potential adoptable dogs. It was just that moment interacting with a greyhound, a breed I knew little about beforehand, that opened up the process for us. In fact, we hadnt even met Dylan until Saturday, when the local group brought him and a couple other adoptable dogs to our home. The wait and the process involved was definitely worth it!

(108,978 posts)to getting a retired greyhound. I didn't know why she was so set on it, but she was . And I remember that the process was quite involved and you had to be special people to get one.
So good for you!

(430 posts)Steps, racing hounds never had steps to deal with.
Richard Skipworth an English cartoonist captures the hound's actions perfectly.
Steve Sanderson, an English painter, paints many greyhounds (frequently walking with an old man).

(16,860 posts)Ours is scared, like totally intimidated by our homes stairs to the second floor. His bed and our bedroom are on the first floor so, for now, the fact he cant go upstairs or, I should say, wont go upstairs, is ok. Thank you for the link.
rustbeltvoice
(430 posts)It may take a long time, and in stages. There is a difference for some in going up, and going down. The material of the steps makes a difference. Public steps in parks may be easier to navigate, perhaps because of no walls. Greyhounds can be rock stubborn, but when one day when unattended and they really want to, they will.

(16,860 posts)Hes so expressive, almost like a human...every emotion he has he shows on his face, which is hilarious and heartwarming all at the same time. My wife was cooking dinner last night and she corrected him for counter surfing for food...he looked at me with the most sincere look as if to say Dad!!? Can you believe Mom just did that to me.

(16,381 posts)Part of me really wants a small dog to carry around with me. (My 10-year-old, fifty pound, catahoula is difficult to pick up and I'm not getting any younger.) The other part of me wants to adopt a greyhound. I know people who work for the greyhound adoption organization for this area, have their card in my car, keep looking at it....
Docreed2003
(16,860 posts)I will admit they carry their own needs and requirements, but they also are some of the most soulful Ive ever been around. Theyre just special creatures. Give them a chance!

Docreed2003
(16,860 posts)And for a couch potato that can run 35 mph, hes certainly made his laps in the yard so far...whether its leaves falling, birds, or the rare squirrel still hanging around here this time of year!

(243 posts)They are the BEST!!! I've known several, but never had one of my own. They are amazing couch potatoes when you want them to be, but are always happy about walks and can run flat out at the dog park when they are allowed. Thank you for saving him!
