diabetic kitty went very hypoglycemic last night./home

kira, 11, "fluffy & plush" as she describes her self. went very hypoglycemic late last evening. we noticed that she was behaving oddly, didn't join us for tv time cuddles/watching (2 humans, 1 biggish dog snoring, usually 4 cats watching person of interest, but no kira.) there was angry hissing in the hall, paw slappys and then a very disoriented cat staggered down towards us. she didn't blink when i flicked my fingers towards her eyes, circled, fell sideways on the bed, lost bowel control, yowled and had what i thought was a seizure. so off to the vet er we went.
her glucose, at admission was 31, she usually is 180ish on 3.5 units on lantis insulin twice a day for almost 2 years. she is still there now.
i strongly suspect she she got into her fursister bladder stone cat food ( yes all of our middle aged cats eat specialized diets) or maybe some of the dogs food. whichever happened, our emergency fund has been hit hard.
the saddest, for me, was when , ms wonderful, her main human, had to sign the code/no code form. for the first time, in years, she had to make that very sad and specific choice.

1. we've experienced the complexity of managing insulin levels of a diabetic cat\multi-pet environment

It was a roller coaster ride that we could neither afford nor manage. We now feed all of our cats EVO Turkey & Chicken Formula Dry Cat Food and our diabetic cat no longer requires insulin since it is only 7% carb. Prior to that we were swinging from near coma to living next to the water bowl with extreme weight loss. It took a few months with the new food, but almost all of Daschle's weight is back.

We will keep Kira in our thoughts.

2. been there- very scary

Spent 3 hours at the vet on my bday 2 years ago with a crashing kitty. My boy's sugar was at 20 last week- usually around 220. Hated getting his ears poked every 30 mins and having honey rubbed in his mouth.

That had to be scary. It is hard enough with one cat with health issues, but managing that many pets is definitely a challenge.

4. kira came home last night

she seems okay. she sat on her humoms' lap most of last night, preventing all the other cats from coming near, so i had 2 cats on my lap, one on the recliner back doing my hair, and this morning she tried to hustle me for the morning drop of coffee cream they often get. she's got a follow up blood test today at 1:30, mid insulin time, so more info later. thanks for the well wishes.

6. What is a normal BG for a kitty? 180 seems somewhat high

I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and the generally acceptable range (for humans, anyway) is around 80 to 120. I'd ask the vet if that's correct, and maybe get an updated insulin/carb ratio to work with if not. That must be quite a challenge, keeping a diabetic animal under good control. I know I'm quite enough of a challenge some days as is!
