Related: About this forumWhat is your cats' favorite cat litter?
My cats' favorite is "Swheat Scoop", an organic wheat-based litter. It is dusty, it is easy to kick out of the litter box, and once out ... it is easy to track *all* over the house. Just as they get the place pretty much fixed up the way they like it, with litter and litter dust everywhere .... I spend the couple hours to clean it up so they have to start all over again. It does sort of remind me of living at the beach.
Any suggestions on cat litter? I don't want to use sand (with what ever makes the sand clump). "Feline Pine" looks like it wouldn't spread around so much, but I don't like the pine smell. Those white pebbles of whatever chemical that is .... supposedly isn't good for the cats.

(9,464 posts)They use Cat's Pride scoopable. My Princess kitteh resorts to pooping outside the box when I've tried other brands. It has a consistency like beach sand, so I think it's soft on her little paw pads. I haven't tried other brands since I got Simon kitteh, so I don't know if he even cares.

(17,276 posts)It is about the dustiest stuff we ever used. But Pet Smart's brand, Exquisicat is also pretty bad, dust-wise.
I've been through the pine and cedar phase and have gone back to clay. Current favorite is Walmart's Special Kitty Multiple Cat Scoopable, mainly because it is 99.9% dust free. And also because it is cheap.
Edit to add: I think there are actually two Feline Pines: one is more like a nugget and one is finely shredded stuff. You can guess which one I tried.

(1 post)I used pine scent one I use to get from petco.
But last year I got a new self cleaning litter box I've seen on http://boxlar.com and that litter is to small granulated and it doesn't work so well.
The clumping one is the best litter there is... but don't be cheap, buy a real quality one.

We changed to a covered litter pan partially b/c of that issue. Do you think your cats would adapt to one (I know some refuse to go thru the door)?

(3,584 posts)Even though I clean the cat boxes often, the cover still seems to hold in a smelliness, that my cats don't like.
I could make sort of an arched cover out of some kind of mesh-screening material that would ventilate the box but keep the litter inside. I think we may have something here!
I did try putting mats around each cat box that would hold the litter that got kicked out of the box. One of my cats decided he liked using the matting more than he liked using the cat box.

(18,219 posts)because I liked the idea of a totally biodegradable litter, but I thought it had an odor that was really strong if I didn't change the whole box weekly. It was a sickeningly sweet odor that I do not get from other litters. I use a mid-priced store brand at Pet Supplies Plus (the only pet supply store in my area) called Premium Choice. It is clay based or whatever that scoopable litter is. I use only nonscented.
I remember there was a conversation here about litter, and Kestrel 91316 said that she suggested the Petco store brand or Petsmart store brand. She did say that the brands everyone sees everywhere (like Tidy Cat and Fresh Step) seem to cause the most problems in cats. I tried to find the discussion, but it was just too long ago for me to remember where I saw it.

(3,584 posts)that isn't healthy for the cat?

(18,219 posts)I do know that I had a pair of cats who lived to 17 and 18 years old, and I used the clay based litter their whole lives. So I am not too concerned that this is not safe. Not that this is a sure-proof reason, but I am not too worried about it. I am more bothered by all the trash from it in a landfill---but I have no other choice that I have found acceptable.

(9,696 posts)It has a nice "no-smell" smell, too.
Every time I pick up a bag at the pet store, if someone else is buying it at the same time they will always say "isn't this the best litter?" or something to that effect.
And of course, Natures Miracle enzyme spray is a must have!

(3,584 posts)Actually, if the litter was not such small pieces, it probably wouldn't spread around so much. I have on hand a small sack of "World's Best". .... which is corn. I'll start with that tomorrow.

I stumbled upon this site: http://catsadored.com/NEAR%20PERFECT%20LITTER/NEAR_PERFECT_LITTER.htm
a couple of years ago. Have been using it since. It's a little messy but I use mats to prevent tracking.
The low cost is a huge advantage and I love that it comes in LARGE bags!

(6,163 posts)I haven't yet, but I am tempted to since I need to watch my wallet.
I would appreciate any input if anyone uses it.

(18,219 posts)but I don't think that it holds together as well as a better quality litter. It is not bad, but will sometimes get broken up if the kitty is a big-time scratcher/digger. But if price matters, it was not too bad---you should try it and see if it works for you.
BTW, I love Aldi's! This is not the worst litter I have tried.

(24,764 posts)My cats are finicky when it comes to their litter. I tried to substitute store brand litter for Fresh Step because it's cheaper, but the results have been disastrous, both for them and for me. With the off-brand litter, the box stinks, Max misses the box, and the house smells of cat droppings and ammonia within 2 days.
So much for saving money. I'm getting Fresh Step even though it costs more. I don't have to change the litter as often.
