(7,768 posts)I've been fortunate to have many wonderful dogs in my life!
A German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Borzoi and four Border Collies (Kelsey, Tess, Pearl and presently 1 year old Ryn!) Border Collies...sigh, they're so amazing, beautiful and wicked SMART (imo of course)

(17,865 posts)Aussie/Sheltie mix. My daughter has a 7 month old border collie.
They are insanely smart dogs. My daughters do agility with them.
I used to be able to jog/walk 20 miles a day with my border collie. Now he turns back at about 3-4 miles - it is kind of sad. Of course I can't do 20 miles anymore either.
The thing I love about my old boy is he is always on the look out for his flock (his people walking with him). He always knows where he is, and which direction is home.
The aussie/sheltie has the heart of an agility champion. She will do anything you ask from her. So smart and so affectionate. She had been abused in her prior home (we adopted both dogs from the shelter when they were one year old). She was so scared when we got her particularly afraid of men. Now she cuddles with me all the time.
The young border collie comes form a champion agility and herding line. She is so fast it is scary.

(7,768 posts)Congratulations on the shelter rescues! Several of the dogs I had were rescues also.
Where I live (a very small community) our shelter is so successful at finding homes for animals that they actually bring them in from other states to place them here locally.
Yeah, gotta love and hug them every day they are with you on this earth. My Border, Pearl (my user name, I called her PearliePoo as a term of endearment) lived to 15-1/2 years. She finally got doggie dementia, started going to a corner and staring at the wall and then she quit eating. Worst day of my life to have to take her in to the vet.
She (Pearlie) was the best dog anyone could ever dream of. I grieve for her still and always will. Her ashes are on my desk in front of me now.
Wish I knew how to post my favorite photo of her sitting on my Polaris 4-wheeler (her favorite toy..lol) waiting to ride with me hauling firewood!
Thanks for the nice description and stories of your beautiful dogs!

(17,865 posts)Just when I was walking the Cedar Valley Nature trail.
Used to be during the week 6 miles/day. On weekends 10-12 miles/day.
Now I am at 3 miles/day and 5-6 miles/day on weekends. I occasionally pull off a 10 mile/day, but not with the Border Collie. My feet and achilles tendons can't take it anymore. I row instead (about 45 minutes/day).
Saying goodbye to a dog is really hard. Glad you did have your time with your special dog. I talked with my daughter about end of life decisions with my older daughter last night. My boy and girl are no where near that, but you can see they are on the downward slide. My little girl wasn't able to jump into the bed with my daughter last night.

(29,293 posts)We had Weimaraners at home, never realized they were related to setters. Also fascinating to learn about the history/migration of these warm, friendly companions.

(Yeah, DailyMail, but it echoes the articles above. Seems someone sold one article to several outlets.)

(16 posts)We've got 4 cattle dogs, 2 red & 2 blue. I just love them. Very smart and such characters. They are too funny at times. We refer to them as the table sharks (when they're circling for anything headed to the floor).

All of my dogs have been mixed breeds.
Some of the pure breed dogs seem to have so many health issues.
Besides the cost.

(8,554 posts)This wasnt all that surprising, since these dogs are little fluffy white guys as Mr. Rush described his wifes pets, the kind he was embarrassed to be seen with in the big-dog town of Moose, Wyo., where he lived. To escape notice, he walked them at night on long retractable leashes, an exercise he described as Trolling for Owls, the title of his album."

Thanks for sharing these articles; it's pretty neat to see people interested in that sort of research.
Another very ancient dog breed is the Chow, but so far, they've only been traced to China, to my knowledge.
My daughter has an abiding love of Chow Chows; throughout her entire youth, I never had to worry much about her independent lifestyle or being out alone in the wild world, for her faithful guardian was always by her side, on alert to protect her from any predator or asshole who crossed their path. It was heart wrenching to see her first dear girl finally pass on but she soon had rescued yet another fine woofie (the younger one adopts a Chow, the better chance of training it and socializing it properly) and we're all still grieving his loss earlier this year.
I used to know Tom many years ago and I can just picture him sneaking out in the dark to walk those funny-looking little critters.

Thanks for the terrific information.
