His name was Prince and he was the "greeter" at my vet's office. He was a paraplegic cat who was brought in and never left, a good place for him since he was quite social and a place with several vets on call was an ideal home for a cat with his health issues.

He would greet everyone who came through the door, cat dog or bird. We were told that he'd know to sit by those who were the most ill and I can remember him sitting close to my cat's carrier.

He was quite popular and clients brought him gifts, but the rule was they couldn't be food. He had to be caged at night or else he'd rip into the bags of food they kept there and make himself sick, not a good thing for a cat with health issues.

He eventually passed away, which was the saddest day for all the staff and the clients. I brought my dog in around that time and it was strange not to have him meet us at the door - but we were able to sign his guestbook and share a memory or two. He really was one of a kind, quite the personality and we still miss him...

Our Calico, Molly, is normally very much a daddy's girl; spends most of her time on my lap and sleeps on or immediately beside me. On weeks right after my wife has chemotherapy, however, Molly spends much more time in her lap than in mine. She knows when my wife needs the calming and comforting influence of her purr motor.
