(3,702 posts)We separate our trash into 2 trash cans - organic/compost stuff that we take to the county compost weekly and our regular garbage. You can imagine which one smells tastiest.
We keep both up on stools above nose level. I was sleeping in yesterday, husband was at a dr appointment. I woke up to my german shepherd pacing in front of me with a cute face and that look of "don't go in the kitchen" and my lab mix looking like a princess.
Go to the kitchen - they had knocked over the organic trash and had that strewn all over the kitchen and dining room. I didn't hear a thing - they must have worked together in stealth mode.

(9,831 posts)laughing at your post.
Our family once had a cocker spaniel and a cat that would get into mischief together just like your dogs. Fortunately, it didn't involve compost! One day, my siblings and I came in from school and the house was a mess. Stuff had been dragged from every corner of the house into the living room--toys, pillows, hairbrushes, towels, socks, pantyhose, shoes, clothes, stuffed animals. Up the stairs from the basement came the dog and cat, side-by-side, acting innocent as little lambs.

(3,702 posts)He picked up all my candles from around my apartment studio and lined them up along the wall
He ripped up carpeting and stuffed silverware underneath
He pushed his water bowl next to the living room chair that I sprayed with bitter apple spray..apparently lick, chew, rinse repeat
He moved a wheeled office chair into the kitchen, climbed on the counter and opened the cupboards
He got into a bottle of Bath & Body massage oil and rolled in it ..greeted me at the door with all his fur slicked back smelling of juniper breeze
My all time favorite....he tore up the sofa...distributed stuffing around the studio but in the middle he piled the cushions one on top of the other with stuffing on top. And then on the very top of that he place a little beanie baby frog.
I did kennel him...one of those airline crates that you have to squeeze with two fingers at the same time to open the door. He could open it from the inside in less than 15 min (shortest I left him alone and found him free)
His separation anxiety (and mine) was bad. But man did I love him! Miss him every single day.
Your cat and dog looking innocent after that type of destruction is hilarious...I think the innocent look also has a bit of pride mixed in of "wow look at what we did and watch our guardian try to keep it together "

He had a good thing and he knew it.

(3,702 posts)He went with me everywhere - I would take him to the office when I worked late and he would be so happy (had his own little area with a toy, rug and dish) to just be there with me.
He was really a great dog (aren't they all??) But I would be lying if I wasn't frustrated as heck at the time - oh man, I tried every single training method at once (and you know many contradict) and he was so confused. I read every book, consulted trainers etc. But I really learned how much dogs pick up on their owners emotions... when I finally just said enough - no more dog Prozac (he was on that), no more weird training ideas, I am just going to love him and learn to live with the destruction and anxiety....so much of it stopped.
Each dog I have had has taught me so much - they are so amazing.... their capacity for love and creative mischief never ceases to amaze me!

(1,328 posts)in your description of dogs.
We've had some that destroyed things but not quite to that extent but we lived with it and learned some lessons along the way.
I'm sure your pain was tremendous when he crossed over but you were lucky enough to have had him and his love.

(52,162 posts)He would get on top of my recliner which was fairly close to a counter that lead to the kitchen counter, then he would go wild. He also likes to get on my table when I am gone. I have to be very careful where I leave things, and he is a long legged jack russel not a big dog.
