Some new photos of Yoshi, some slightly older and Mr. Turtle

I barely have any time anymore to get on the computer at all much less come to DU, so since I have a little time before bed, I thought I'd pop in with some photos to share.

Here's a few photos of Yoshi soon after he came to live here with me when it was still summer and hot outside doing what he loves best...

NAPPING!!! Well, we had an exciting day of playing in the stream at the park, so he was pooped (and wet).

This one I took yesterday... Yoshi hanging out in the back driveway waiting for the magic garage door to open which means K's daughter (who he's totally smitten with) is about to pull in. He knows the sound of her car engine now and knows she's coming when she's still a few minutes from pulling in, and he HAS to be out there waiting for her...

This I just took a few minutes ago. That's my "bed" since my mattress doesn't fit in this little room and is still out on the back porch with some of my other furniture that has no place to go (there isn't an inch of storage space here). My "bed" doubles as HIS bed when I'm not sleeping. I still have his old bed in a plastic bag in the trunk of my car since there's not a square inch of floor space for it (and it doesn't smell very nice anymore which I never noticed when it was in my old house, but in this little room, er, it's noticeable). That's partly why I'm still up... he's hogging the "bed" and looks too comfy to move just yet...

BTW... I really hate that couch. Not just because the fabric is ugly as sin with the exploding cabbage head roses, but that it takes up much needed space in this little room, and I can't do anything with it. I can't sleep on it since the cushions slide off, and it's too narrow so I fall out of it and crash on the floor (I always did have to have my mattress right on the floor because of that).

Here's some photos of Mr. Turtle in his huge tank...

He's so ugly he's cute. He also much prefers the top of his house rather than inside it. The fish made the mistake of thinking it was safe to go hide inside his house since they didn't think he ever went in there... but sometimes he does. Dumb fish. He doesn't seem to want to eat his last few fish friends for awhile because then he'd have no entertainment, but eventually he'll eat them too if they aren't smart enough to stay out of range when he wants a snack. Once he's down to his last couple of fish friends, K goes out and buys more for him.

In these he's mourning the loss of his shrimp that fell between his house and the side of the tank that he can't get to and that his fishy friends ate (maybe that's why he ate his fish friends! LOL!)... he often loses his shrimps over the side since he's dumb as a brick and can't seem to find his shrimps even when he steps on them or they're floating in his face...

Last weekend my landlord, K (it's his house and he lives here) bought a coy fish baby and told Mr. Turtle not to eat him because he was $8 and just looks like an over-sized goldfish because he's a baby. K doesn't care if he eats his other fishy friends since they're only 39 cents each. I don't think Mr. Turtle cares how much the coy baby cost... he's been lying in wait doing his rock imitation in the hope that the coy baby will come within range (and that he's paying attention... he usually forgets to pay attention). So far, the coy baby has been very smart... but they all start out being wary.

I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I'd be so fascinated by a big ugly ass snapping turtle that does absolutely nothing at all... he rarely even blinks. He does get rammy when he gets fed or when he feels like stalking his fishy friends... and when he sees Yoshi. Yoshi doesn't care about him one iota because he can't find Mr. Turtle's scent (well, he's in a tank so of course he wouldn't). I think Yoshi is convinced that the turtle tank is just a big tv screen and that Mr. Turtle is a fake turtle like things on tv are just fake things although I had thought he discovered that things on tv are fake things when he checked behind the tv and couldn't find the bear or the horse or whatever he was interested in on tv, and when he goes to look "behind" the turtle tank he sees the ass end of the turtle on the other side of the tank. I guess he determined the "no scent" criteria was the make or break criteria, so now he believes Mr. Turtle is just a fake turtle in a tv tank even when Mr. Turtle is bashing his head against the glass wanting to get at "the big hairy roast" walking past his tank ignoring him... "Hey! HEY!!! Dinner! Get right back here so I can feast on you, Dinner!!! HEY!!! WAIT!!! COME BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!"

And since Yoshi decided to relinquish the bed in favor of the floor in front of the toilet (always was his favorite napping place - with the potty), I'm snagging my bed back now.

First I'm off to say goodnight to Mr. Turtle who won't even bother to blink at me (he has eyelids, and I swear I saw him wink at me once) and check if he ate any of his fishy friends that are still left. I saw him eat one once... it's not pretty. Ok, I'm really going to the fridge since there's a Halloween cupcake in there with my name on it and it's been calling me all damn night. I'll say goodnight to Mr. Turtle on my way back with whatever is left of my gooey squishy yummy cupcake.

Night all.

I meant to try looking it up but by the time I got the photos uploaded and finished the post it was a lot later than I had expected. K and I are learning about these Koi fishies... if Mr. Turtle doesn't eat him he should get pretty big in that big tank. Already he seems much smarter than the regular goldfish. I'll be sad if Mr. Turtle ends up eating him. Never thought I'd say that about a little fish.

Thanks for the link! Interesting little fishy he got. I really don't want Mr. Turtle to eat this one.

He's just so stupid he can't seem to find them even when it's right in front of him. He can see the fridge from his perch on top of his house, and he knows when K goes to get his shrimps for dinner and gets all excited paddling around at the feeding gate in the tank and opening and closing his mouth... his HUGE mouth (there's no teeth in there though).

I think his preference is to eat dead things since despite his being slow and clumsy and terribly stupid the dead things don't run away, and he can eat them as long he doesn't stupidly kick his food between the side of his house and the side of the tank where he can't get it. K gives him whatever fish croak in the other fish tanks (they're all over the house - cold water, warm water, fresh water, salt water...), and it's like a special treat for him.

For the most part the other fish in Mr. Turtle's tank are more entertainment for him. I think he only eats his fishy friends when he gets especially bored or they do stupid things to piss him off, like hanging out in his house or swimming around his head and especially trying to eat scales and whatever yummy bits he sheds off before they actually fall off him. He'll put up with a fishy annoyance for quite some time before he gets fed up and CHOMP... bye bye fishy ex-buddy.

It scares me how much I watch what the turtle is up to especially when 99% of the time he does absolutely nothing at all. Everyone else here does it too though. Fascinating yet excruciatingly boring beastie.

I'm relieved that Yoshi thinks he's a tv turtle and completely ignores him and the whole tank... I had a horrible thought of him trying to "play" with the turtle and crashing the glass of his tank.

12. He has a whole second floor of his tank that's dry

If you check out the photo of the whole tank there's another section K built above the water tank so he can get out of the water if he wants to. He built a ramp so Mr. Turtle can swim up to it and just walk up the ramp so that he's on the "second floor" where it's dry. He just doesn't like it up there for some reason. He might go up there at night though when we're all asleep and it's dark in the living areas of the house. K had some of his rocks and stuff up there to make it nice for him, and the first (and possibly only) time Mr. Turtle was up there he shoved everything down the ramp so it all fell in the water and sank to the bottom.

K's been beside himself over what we can't figure out Mr. Turtle doesn't like about his second story that's dry and what he can do to make him like it, but maybe that's it... that during the day and when we're all coming and going through the livingroom/diningroom he doesn't feel safe out of the water and only goes up there late at night while we're all asleep and it's dark. The fish shop guy thinks he looks very healthy, so he is probably going up there while we're all asleep. I think K also cleans his shell with a special brush from time to time as well.

I don't think K realizes it, but I really think he loves that turtle like it was a dog or cat. Oddly enough I think Mr. Turtle loves him, too, but that could be that he just knows it's K that feeds him... none of us are willing to go anywhere near the feeding gate, and K will plunge his whole arm in the tank and "play" with him.

I've tried sneaking up on him late at night but he always knows when someone is coming... and I have to have a light on to even find my way to the tank, so maybe that tips him off. So far, no one has ever seen him on his "second floor," but he may still go up there when no one is about and it's dark. He pokes his head up above the water from time to time for fresh air and to put air into or expel it out of his shell. It looks really funny when he pumps air into his shell because his ass end floats up and makes me think of Yoshi since Yoshi likes to stick his butt up in the air for no particular reason. Having air in his shell (well, I guess it's in a space just under his shell) I guess makes it easier for him to swim around. Or something.

Ok, I just took this photo of the other side of the tank, and you can see a lot better the second story... I also changed the color of the light, so you can see it better (K rigged the lights so they can be any color or change colors automatically, but Mr. Turtle only likes the subdued more natural colors)...

That's Mr. Turtle glaring at me on the bottom of the tank right in front of his house next to K's smartphone. K had his smartphone in his shirt pocket, and when he was up on the ladder last night fixing the feeding gate he leaned over too far and it slid out of his pocket and plopped into the tank. For some reason he thought this was hysterically funny though he'll have to buy a new phone... and figure out how to get his phone that fell in off the bottom the tank without going swimming himself. That's one thing about him that's very cool though... he finds the humor in pretty much anything. Makes for a funny photo though with Mr. Turtle hovered with a smartphone just like people do these days.

Yoshi wants to go walking again and visit all his new doggie neighborhood friends now that K's daughter, Miss J, is home from work and done playing with him. She got home quite some time ago, and I could hear her out there laughing and having a good time with him for at least an hour. Whenever I eventually leave here and have my own place again, she's going to be so upset that Yoshi won't be here anymore. We can come visit, but it won't be the same. She's gotten very attached to him. She has her ferret, but that's not the same as a big dopey dog that adores you... and he's just smitten with her.
