Related: About this forumI would so like this here in the US
The Turkish company Pugedon has recently introduced a vending machine thats an innovative way to help both the environment and our furry friends. It releases food for the citys stray dogs and cats every time a plastic bottle is deposited, and it allows people to empty their water bottles for the animals as well.
This wonderful service operates at no charge to the city because the recycled plastic pays for the cost of food. So, with a little financial investment, the simple machines do a lot of good. They provide a steady source of sustenance to the animals, many of which rely on caring residents to regularly feed them. It also encourages people to make a habit of recycling and help conserve our environment for future generations

(43,049 posts)how does it work in practice? One greedy dog could eat all the food.

(33,001 posts)I think giving fresh water to any thirsty being is a good thing. while I can see your point about pet overpopulation, due to stupid human behaviors and natures' mathematics, I suspect we will have to agree to disagree on this topic.

(15,882 posts)to keep them out of the shelters. Look at the difference between Calgary, where they think it is a failure for any dog to enter the shelter, and almost any American city where they make money by pretending that killing will stop overpopulation.
Simply being humane does not increase their numbers. That is the Rethug theory for why we shouldn't provide food stamps.
What controls population is treating each other, and our animals, with respect.

(26,366 posts)I actually know someone that had several rats as pets. I still don't think it's a good
idea to put sufficient food out for stray rats do you?

(8,175 posts)And that's a good thing.
Oh, and I'd rather see well fed strays littering our streets than plastic bottles.

(15,222 posts)I really love your comment "Simply being humane does not increase their numbers". Nicely put!
If there are going to be stray animals (which there are), I'd much rather them be as healthy as possible, too. Of course, there needs to be an aggressive spay/neuter program going along with feeding them, and providing these feeding stations might lend itself well to trapping the strays for that purpose.

(33,001 posts)since you asked, I went and did a little research ( from huff po )...
The Turkish company Pugedon recently introduced a vending machine in Istanbul that releases food and water for the city's stray dogs in exchange for recycled plastic bottles, Big Think reported. Once someone deposits their bottle at the top, food is released at the bottom. The Pugedon Smart Recycling Boxes operate at no charge to the city, and the recycled bottles cover the cost of the food.
Since you asked, I went searching ...youtube has a few videos. I like how the cat @1.12 is waiting for the humans to hurry up and finish restocking.

(18,219 posts)Maybe it is because I live in the US, where there are so many sick individuals. Is the water that is emptied into that reservoir the same water that then goes to the animals? If so, is there any way to protect from some asshole putting something besides water in there?
Also, I wonder how many animals learn to hang out around these dispensers and if that becomes a chronic problem in the areas where they are.
irisblue
(33,001 posts)doesn't seem so ( maybe we have more sick-os here then they do in Turkey?).
