Need help with a cat issue.

I have a wonderful cat. I have new leather furniture. Cat likes to sleep on top of the back of the sofa right behind my head when Im sitting there and in jumping up there is scratching the leather. Not claw sharpening but just the process of coming to a stop at the end of the jump.

How can I prevent or discourage the cat from that one place?

We have a kitty condo that she scratches but she likes to sleep right behind my head while I'm watching TV.

I had the same problem with my cat, but we plan to replace the living room furniture soon so we took off the cover. Kitty is having a blast lol!

and if you wanted to go the route, kitty claw covers - of course, rather expensive and have to keep replacing. And the most simple, regular nail clipping. However, once I clipped too much and the cat bled like the proverbial stuck pig running around the house leaving little bloody cat prints all over. Vet said to put talc powder on the cut if this happens to you.

3. Triple-ply sheets of aluminium foil over that spot.

Cats don't usually care to be sticking their claws through it.

After a few days she might lose the habit, you can then fold the foil up and slide it into a drawer or magazine rack or whatever's handy, but keep it around.

You may need to rinse and repeat.

speculatively,

4. I was thinking of something like that. Passive response to make it less than pleasant

to jump up there. I'll give it a try.

I don't want to discourage the affection but really need to protect the brand new furniture.

7. I use two sided tape to keep my kitties off of furniture they're not allowed on.

Cats, at least mine, find it repulsive! In your case, since it's new leather and all, maybe single sided tape doubled over to stick in place? It shouldn't hurt the leather that way, and will be easy to remove later. I'd try something like some painters tape or some other not too sticky tape to be on the safe side.

Once you train them that it's not a nice place to sleep they usually forget about it in a few days and move on to a new area.

If this doesn't work they make caps you can glue onto your kitties claws, but I find them to be a nuisances. I just trim my kitties claws and try and discourage them from being attracted to places I want protected. Like with my tape trick.

Note: Don't trim or cap your kitties claws if you let them outside. They need their claws if they go outside for self defense and to be able to escape threats.
