Former 41-pound fat cat in Texas slims down to 19 pounds

DALLAS (AP) — A former 41-pound cat dubbed Skinny has lost more than half of his weight to become the darling of a Dallas veterinary clinic.

Dr. Brittney Barton says the orange tabby she adopted in 2013 has slimmed down to 19 pounds with exercise and a special diet. Barton calls Skinny the "resident cat" at her practice, HEAL Veterinary Hospital.

Barton said Friday that Skinny spends weekdays roaming the clinic. The ex-fat cat's weekends are spent at home with Barton and her family.

Skinny was found abandoned near Dallas in 2012 and ended up at a shelter. The vet says Skinny just had his annual checkup and is healthy.

Barton says Skinny is living proof that while he's supposed to be a large cat, "he's not supposed to be an obese cat."

At the vet, my long-haired cat just weighed in at 14 lbs and the vet says she should weigh 12. (She's a larger breed, maybe a Maine Coon mix--I'd be happiest if she weighed 11.) With her long hair it's hard to see what shape she's actually in but she's hefty! The tabby could also stand to lose a pound or so.

Anyway the vet says to feed the following amounts for weight loss, total, per day: 1/2 can (5.5 oz) wet food and 1/4 cup of dry food. I calculate this is about 175 calories per day. I have a 2 T. coffee measure to dole out the dry kibble.

She says feed twice a day, but for my crew it works out better as four small meals (when I am at home). A quarter can in the morning, 1/8 cup dry at noon, 1/4 can in the evening, and 1/8 cup dry after that when they have finished the canned, for the two that need to lose, and a bit more for the young male who doesn't. He gets another 1/4 can wet food a day, but if he starts to get fat I will know what to do.

If I feed them all both wet and dry food at the same time, the long-hair will eat all the dry and the other two will eat all the wet food!

Slow and gradual weight loss is the best. Now to see how I can make her exercise, not having an underwater treadmill!

Dam... mine did not like that site...

But yeah, I have 19 lb. orange tabby - it's a struggle to keep him to that weight...he got up to 22 lbs. once..

We tried a low fat diet - bad news... his fur just started coming out in clumps and felt really wierd - almost sticky...

Switched to a medium fat diet and that seems to have fixed the problem.

He likes to eat
